But how does it determine what is innappropriat? That is the key. Many programs do that, but I have never seen one that does it well (or at least well enough for my liking). All that I have seen let some of the in-direct things through (like banner ads, for example), and block other things that shouldn't be (like sites speaking out against child pornography).
If for some reason you can't be present all the time they use the computer, then get a less expensive blocker. That way it will block most of the stuff you/your kid will run into, but will probably block less things that it shouldn't.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
If the kid wants to look at pornography, he's going to look at it. There's pretty much no way to stop them. And you need to remember that kids are a bunch smarter than you think.
But if you do want a [good] filter, you're going to have to pay. Sorry. For a one-time fee, I highly recommend CyberSitter [http://www.cybersitter.com/]. For a monthly fee, and a little better protection, I'd check out bsafe [http://www.bsafehome.com/].
But another GREAT way to go is letting your ISP filter the internet themselves. A great company that I've recommended for a long time now is Arilion [http://www.arilion.com/].
I hope these tips will help.
Grace and Peace,
Clayton

Well the one thing I'm trying to learn (I've got a few years I hope) is I'm going to create & run a proxey server.
Her computer will connect to my SUSE system, & that will connect to the internet.
This way, the ONLY sites she will be able to visit is IP address on a white list. Not on the list, then no visit.
Also I can track all visit attempts, and hopfully also filter all e-mail, and monitor IRC chat and such.

Isaiah 8:12-13 (NIV) "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread."
You will not get an effective free filter. It takes alot of time to constantly keep up with pornographers. It needs someone who is being paid full time to do it. http://www.afafilter.com/default.asp?13850 they say this one is good. I have not tried it but if I was going to buy one Id try them first. It has a free trial and moneyback guarantee. It is customizeable and you can allow sites which may be mistakenly blocked and all other kinds of features.

Maybe before you say that you should at least try some of them. The one I offered is deadly effective. You can pay for it if you want, which removes some advertising.
I think all you guys are talking out of your hats because of your bias. I will bet not one of you people has tried the program I recommend. Not one. (Weblocker)

Nothing is more despicable than a respect based on fear.
Would anyone recommend modifiying the Hosts file? Any website that is on the list provided by the site I linked to will be routed back to localhost, and your child will not be able to see it.
