That isn't official Marine Corps PT gear. "Out of curiosity... for those that have been in the Marines, do you think that there would have been a lot of social pressure to particiapte?"
It doesn't appear that there was any for this exercise, but for other things, yes there is.

During bootcamp there was four hours every Sunday morning. You could go to church or you didn't have to. Up to you. They didn't care if you went or not. I went a few times and it was even really a Christian religious service. A lot of people getting up, stating what they want to say, some of different religions, some singing, what have you. I think it was used mainly to "relax" for a moment.
If people organized this optional PT session, you wouldn't be forced or made like you had to do it. If this was organized PT, you wouldn't see the cross in the front. You'd see the platoon guideon or this:
Also, perhaps to irritate some of you, one of the mottos of the Corps is, "God, Corps, Country."
It's God, Country, Corps.
When I went, I went to Catholic mass. There was also a Protestant mass. Other denominations also had services, I recall a Mormon a couple racks down from me who went to those services.

Reps: 95 (power: 0) | | | As with some others, I'm not troubled by this. I understand that military personnel have more limited options for religous services than civilians. As long as no one was ordered to go and no one got special perks for going, then everything is good. The most important issue for me would be that other faiths were allowed the same leeway - e.g. a group of muslim marines PT'ing behind a crescent flag.

Actually we don't have more limited options, it's just that when in the field, or in a training environment, you're quite limited.
Otherwise you can go worship wherever you want.
Heck, I've never even heard of many of the denominations you can have put on your dog tags now.

Thus I stated for "mandatory PT," you do.
Just by reading all of these threads on the politics and news has made me realize that some people really get uptight and make a big deal out of things that really aren't. I say, if these Marines and Sailors want to do this, so be it. I don't think they're hurting anyone. It would be a different story if they were dropping copies of these photos all over Iraq right now. Then people would have a reason to get upset. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
