They sure do! I don't think we have any trees next to the sewer lines, but they can sure do damage when they are. We had a tree taken out recently that was being a real pest. It dropped messy berries, and had a gazillion small tree seedlings growing in our lawn. Anyway, it's gone now, and we are considering what kind of not-so-messy tree to replace it with. All it is allowed to drop are leaves, and nothing else! No berries, no fruit, no sap, etc.
First we will rototill our front yard, and plant a new lawn, then replace the tree. |

I live in Hampton, VA and I am wondering if a red maple would do well here? All I have at this time are a few crape myrtles. I have a two story house and have very few trees, etc on the lot (1/4 acre). In the past I had scrubs, rose bushes, tall crape myrtles, and even a few blue spruce trees. My loss began with my neighbor's cats, I don't know what they drank but it was powerful. The family no longes lives near. Later I lost the blue spruce from a very long extra hot summer, and not so long ago the crape myrtles lost from the hurricane. I now have a few crape myrtles no taller than two feet. With a two story house I need something that will grow fairly tall and blend in with the house. I guess what I am looking for is any suggestions on what to plant. Thank you for your time. I do not have the so called Green Thumb. |

The cuts won't be able to heal, and when the sap begins to rise in the spring it will bleed out of the wounds, severely weakening or killing the tree. Maples are best pruned in late spring or early summer, after they're fully leafed out, so that they have time to heal before winter.

I'd like to put a dwarf peach tree in a container on my deck. Do you think this would work? Also, where did you get your dwarf peach tree? Originally Posted by fisherman2 Just remember tree roots like water, and they tend to grow toward your sewer lines, take it from someone that knows.
Would they also grow towards other plumbing lines, like the main water line that comes into the house? I was planning on putting a small tree off one corner of my front porch, but that's also where the main water line comes in. Should I put something else there instead?
Do shrubs cause as much problems with water lines as trees do? In the back, where the septic tank is, I wanted to put some evergreen shrubs, like holly or camellia. Will this be okay? Does this include Japanese maples? If so, that means I should prune my Japanese maple right now, right? (It's fully leafed out.)
