Penance and Indulgences: What are they? =)

Hi guys,

I just have a quick question: What are penance and indulgences? And if need be, what's the biblical basis for them?

By the way, did anyone know about Scott Hahn's new book, "First Comes Love"? It looks to be a great book. I think it's coming out in a week! =)
