What about tiny protists that flee from danger? Near as I can tell, it's a rather arbitrary line drawn between what's fine to eat and what's cruel.

Yes I agree. But the line has to be drawn somewhere, doesn't it? After all you don't eat other humans, do you? So you have drawn the line at humanity. I will draw the line between Animal and Vegetable. I can't decide nothing is fitting to eat or I will die. |

Yeah, yeah, I have swatted mosquitos. But strictly speaking, that's self defense.
I have lived 34 years and have never in that time killed a spider. My wife has a spider phobia, so when the spider emergency occurs I'm called. I gather the spider up in a piece of Kleenex and release it outside. |

Okay, I'll let it die now....I win, I win!  I'm an internet champion! 
I have lived just short of 34 years and I am a full-blown spider sissy....they give me the willies and rarely do I let them live. If I'm lying in bed and feel something scurry across my back, it's lights on and total sheet removal / bed inspection until the culprit is found or I finally recover psychologically.....as I said before, I am insane.
