Amen Medjugorje Message of November 25, 2008 Dear children! Also today I call you, in this time of grace, to pray for little Jesus to be born in your heart. May He, who is peace itself, give peace to the entire world through you. Therefore, little children, pray without ceasing for this turbulent world without hope, so that you may become witnesses of peace for all. May hope begin to flow through your hearts as a river of grace. Thank you for having responded to my call. I thought I had put most of that behind me and had settled into concentrating on the Mass the best I could. Until last night.
Last night I attended the Life Teen Mass, (which has it's own set of liturgical problems) I was surprised (not shocked, nothing shocks me anymore) to see what was going on before Mass. The priest called up all those who were to be confirmed this year (the teens) for a blessing at the baptismal font. Everything was cool until he gave his prayer book to the cadidates and they took turns reading the 'Prayers of the Faithful' with the deacon standing right there. Okay, that wasn't the end of the world but I wasn't happy. Then the priest continued on about how they were to experience being part of the community. Finally he said that the first thing they would do is to be Eucharistic ministers at that Mass. Wait a second! They haven't even been confirmed yet! No training, or formation. Just go up and do it?!
Lord, have mercy!
Have you told the bishop?

BC,
When those who have not been fully formed in the faith , act as an Extdaordinary Minister of the Holy Communion, when there are those present that have been duly appointed as EMHC's, I have huge problem.

To be an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion someone must have minimally been confirmed and received first Holy Communion. They should be Catholics in good standing and it is up to the bishop to set an age requirement and to commission people for extended periods of time. In my diocese someone can be a junior or senior in HS. A priest may depute people for a single occasion, but not beyond that.
In any case, it probably isn't pastorally appropriate to have the newly confirmed administering the sacrament.

Holy Orders.
Only deacons, priests, and bishops are Eucharistic Ministers. Lay people are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and Redemptionis Sacramentum stated very clearly that we are to make this distinction, since the use of Extraordinary Ministers should be, well, extraordinary.
