I work as a doula and childbirth educator and when all of my children are grown and gone- I aspire to be a midwife. I feel as though it is sort of a secondary vocation...
But the single biggest challenge to overcome if a woman wants to achieve a natural birth is all of the "programming " she has received while being immersed in our culture. For example, the supremacy of technology, the distrustful nature of our created bodies, the necessity for things to run in an industrious fashion, with predicitble (read same) indicators of progress, and a timely finish. In birth- there is a wide, wide range of normal- but our societal consciousness wants there to be only a very small and very straight range for what is acceptable.
Before I can instruct women about how to birth, I have to instruct them in overcoming their mode of thinking- encouraging them to trust in things unseen and immeasurable.
I think the spiritual life is very much like that-- although I had never thought about it that way until you brought it up.. I guess we can be sort of spiritual midwives, helping people's faith be reborn by helping them through God's grace to overcome the distrust of the unseen and the immeasurable!!

That is a great analogy! Spiritual midwives, who have to de-program our brethren.

And upon reflection, what I have seen in my charisms that works best is enthusiasm and heartfelt conviction. By not being afraid to be vulnerable- but to speak to people, and teach them- from the heart- from believing that this is truly what is meant for each and every person!! Each and every person is to live in Spirit and Truth!
Thank you so much for this conversation, it has put everything in a language I can understand!!
