University in hot water with Bishop Brandt for inviting Kmiec to speak

Whether or not Kmiec and the bishops are doing the same thing is a debateable point, but assuming it's true, your statement only points out the absurdity of Kmiec attempting to "do the same thing." The bishops are the source and sign of unity in their local churches and as such hold teaching...

What schooling choice fits your family best?

I don't know. There's so many factors that I couldn't make a decision ahead of time. If I had children with no special needs and a Catholic school in the area that was both orthodox and academically strong, and I had the financial means to pay for it, I'd send them to Catholic school. Barring...

    Catholic Schools

There is a HUGE range. Anything from $1,500 a year to $30,000 a year. American parishes have large religious education programs. In most areas, far more Catholic children attend public school than Catholic.

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

Not desiring parenthood is not a sin. I don't know where you got the idea that it is. Of course, you could have selfish motivations, which would be sinful, but simple lack of desire is not a sin. If one does not desire to be a parent, remaining single is not wrong. And I have no idea how you...

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

Everyone experiences temptation to some sin. There is no lifestyle that precludes temptation to some form of sin. Masturbation is also intrinsically evil. The CCC, while a fantastic resource, cannot be considered a comprehensive text on sexual morality. You need to look outside it to...

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

Not sure what your point is. Insinuating that I'm a heretic? LOL. Okay, let me be more specific. A homosexual act is against conception in that by its very nature it takes sexuality and uses it for that which is intrinsically sterile, in opposition to the true meaning of sexuality. Not...

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

Fated, I understand what grave sin is. I have an MA in theology. I think you are failing to distinguish between the three elements of a moral act.

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

Hyacinth wasn't speaking specifically about homosexuality, but any sex outside marriage. I would agree that a homosexual union, is, by it's very nature, contraceptive. You can't really introduce any external contraceptive to that which is contraceptive.

Help me teach about the sensus fidei

I'm teaching an adult ed class on Lumen Gentium and I'm trying to work out my explanation of the sensus fidei since I know there will be lots of questions. Any thoughts on how you'd teach about what it is (and isn't)?

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

I think you're a bit confused- there are many factors that would affect one's culpability for any given sin, including situation and motivation, but not different categories of gravity (outside venial and mortal). No, it's evil because it is antithetical to the nature of the meaning of...

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

I'm not sure what you mean by "necessary." The assertion made by Hyacinth was that the use of contraception in a non-marital relationship is not sinful, only the act of fornication is. I corrected her, pointing out that that which is intrinsically evil (which contraception is) is always sinful...

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

No, all people (married or single) are called to chastity. As a single person, chastity precludes sex. Thus, there is no ris of disease or pregnancy. Contraception is an intrinsic moral evil (See the CCC no. 2370). As such, no set of circumstances can make it not evil.

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

This is actually incorrect information. Contraception is sinful, whether the couple is married or not. The theory being purported above is essentially consequentialism, which is rejected by the Church (see Veritatis Splendor if you don't believe me)

Pope reaffirms Church opposition to contraception

Whatever one thinks of the Church's teaching on contraception, whatever one's struggles with it, it is nearly impossible to miss the hilarity in this position. Hello- if the Church's teaching on sexuality were abided by, AIDS wouldn't be an issue in our society. Someone who is actively living a...
