Anglican and Lutheran at the same time.

Well, I'm Father Jay at 8:30 on Sunday mornings at an Episcopal church, then Pastor Jay at 10 a.m. at a Lutheran church, so you could say I'm both Lutheran and Episcopalian, just not at the same time.

Anglican with no Anglican church nearby

Yes, a Swedish church would be the closest to an Anglican Church. There is a long history of cooperation and intercommunion between the Church of Sweden and the Church of England. Here in the U.S., some Swedish immigrants in the 1800s who formed parishes became Episcopalian, instead of joining...

Symbolism of the Seder Disproves Real Presence

It is doubtful that the Last Supper was a Seder meal as we know it. For one, it is almost certain that the Haggadah, which has the instructions for the Seder, was not written until well after the time of Jesus. So, the language and actions of the Seder does not prove anything as to the Last Supper.

Advice on alternative to Daily Office

I am a Lutheran pastor, and have at times prayed the daily office using Eastern Orthodox daily prayers. Recently, I wrote a post on my blog about attending vespers at a local Orthodox parish: The Benedictine Lutheran: Looking to the East

The original monastics, the Desert Fathers, were hermits.

    Thomas Merton

I've enjoyed reading Merton. As noted, some don't like him because he was friendly to aspects of Buddhism later in life, but I've read his Alaskan journal which was written during his trip to Alaska shortly before his death, and came to two conclusions: (1) He remained an orthodox Christian up...

    Anglicanism

I can't speak for the Episcopal Church but the ELCA has an agreement with the Presbyterians. As a high church "Evangelical Catholic" (kind of like the Lutheran version of an Anglo-Catholic) I'm not a big fan of our agreement with the Presbyterians.

    Anglicanism

I noticed you are from Sweden - the Scandanavian Lutheran Churches and various Anglican churches have a full communion agreement referred to as the "Porvoo Communion" - The Porvoo Communion Here in America, there is a similar full communion agreement between the ELCA Lutherans and the...

    Validity of Mormon Baptism

Agreed - I don't like citing wikipedia as a source in the first place. I did a google search for "Carolyn Irish Mormon baptism" though, and it seems to be an accepted fact that her Mormon baptism was accepted by the Episcopal Church - based on a variety of sources and comments, including a...

Your top ten favorite movies ever....

Since its October, I'm going to give a little shout-out to these movies (many of which would probably make my 10 desert island films - probably would substitute Raiders of the Lost Ark for The Wolfman and Lord of the Rings for Poltergeist, among a few other substitutions): - Dracula (1931) -...

question about Luther and the Catholic Church

I don't know if these qualify as "high-ranking" but a couple of historically significant people would be: Johann von Staupitz - Luther's father-confessor and Vicar-General of the Augustinian Order in Germany. A key influence on Luther's theology, but I believe when he died in 1524 he was still...

Just for fun - ABC game of weird Anglican jargon

Monasteries - King Henry VIII shut most of them down, but slowly but surely, monasticism has resurfaced in Anglicanism. BTW - Gurney - I love the pic of the Anglican & Orthodox bishops! What a missed opportunity :(

Just for fun - ABC game of weird Anglican jargon

Xmas - a 12 day season celebrated by Anglicans starting on December 25th. Some people think that the "X" takes Christ out of Christmas, but it doesn't, because X stands for the Greek letter Chi, the first letter in Christos.

Just for fun - ABC game of weird Anglican jargon

Oxford Movement - the early 1800s English academics who get the thanks (or blame, depending on your perspective ;)) for the presence of chasubles, incense, and other "catholic stuff" in some of today's Anglican churches.

Have you ever experienced a miracle or supernatural occurence in the Anglican Church?

Cool story, Gurney. I seem to recall from seeing you post over at Catholic Answers that you weren't fond of the Orthodox - I've been studying Orthodoxy for the past several years. To answer your question, I've worshiped on and off at a local Episcopal Church for the past several years at a...

Thoughts on the Archbishop of Canterbury?

I'm just now catching up with this thread - Abp. Williams actually was in America on 9/11 - he was only a few blocks away from the Twin Towers, and he wrote a book about the experience: Amazon.com: Writing in the Dust: After September 11 (9780802821195): Rowan Williams: Books
