    Staff/members discussion thread (report free)

"Let's just say it's rather ironic, you posting this here, and we'll leave it at that. Surely you don't want to open that can of worms." This is a perfect example of the lack of friendliness and respect to which Contra is likely referring. It's grudge-y, threatening and snotty. I have...

Why are some people not saved? "We don't know." Is that universal for Lutherans?

"I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith; even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole...

    The Crucifix a Graven Image?

Jinc, in our church(LCMS), there is a cross over the very simple altar table, no crucifix. There is a crucifix on the back wall of the sanctuary, but I didn't even notice that for a long time. No one kisses anything in the service. Only the pastor makes the sign of the cross, at various points...

How are we to think of gender identity?

"YOU would prefer that i live WITH that pain and not cause you any discomfort. And you have deemed yourself to be the determiner of my destiny. You are not. God is." Absolutely God is the determiner of your destiny. If you are male, so you remain, right down to your very cells and bones. No...

How are we to think of gender identity?

"However, mutilating your genitals is a very specific and irreversible act that these inexact "scientists" claim is a good thing." Nor does mutilating genitals or drugging the body make a man a woman. It's pretend, pure and simple. Regardless of what 'scientists' say, the reality of that thing...

How are we to think of gender identity?

I would say that a scar can be fixed. A gender can not be changed. Gender goes right down to each individual cell. A scar does not. Take away the drugs and a transgendered woman reverts to a man in short order. The pockets created by surgery remain pockets. They never do become 'woman parts'...

How are we to think of gender identity?

Carl Trueman hits it out of the park: "And is there not a tragic incoherence to that person who denies that his body has any authority with regard to his gender identity and yet who demands that his body be changed because it is so significant to his gender identity?" Whose Gender? Which...

How are we to think of gender identity?

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." OF course sexual 'transitioning' is sinful. God created you one way, you don't like it, so you drug/maim yourself to become a caricature of the opposite sex. Pride to the extreme...

What's an official website for the Lutheran weekly liturgy?

    The Blessed Virgin Mary

IOW, saint: YOU are in the exact same position as Mary, should you do the will of the Father. Pretty awesome, isn't it? Our flesh always seems more than a little willing to make itself idols.

    The Blessed Virgin Mary

I think I'll stick with Jesus' take on Mary, which seems like a safe thing to do: "46While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.a 48But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”...

    Why makes/keeps you Lutheran?

I am Lutheran because it is the best church in our area(lots of liberal/evangelical/baptist/mega/non-denoms). If there were an orthodox Reformed or Presby church anywhere close, I'd be there. Nevertheless, I am very fond of my Lutheran church family and thank God for it, daily.

    Adiaphora Alehouse (10)

Friday night(cool and calm), we were able to see Saturn!! What an amazing sight! The rings were so beautiful, and the divisions clearly visible. It's rising in the southeast(we first caught sight of it about 845). For all of May it should be fairly easy to see, and well worth a look if you have...

    Problem with Lutheran baptism teaching!

"I am sure Lutherans have a good explanation for it!" They do: paradox. I also had a great deal of trouble with absolute baptismal regeneration, but reading the Small C, I found Luther always linking faith WITH baptism. No faith, no regeneration, as I read it. Hence folks can fall away from...

    Adiaphora Alehouse (10)

Last night was much better for stargazing(except for the very bright moon, that is). I was able to see Mars and Jupiter(and its many moons), so many beautiful star clusters and star fields. I attached my Canon to the scope and got a couple of moon-shot experiments. What a great joy! I know...

    Adiaphora Alehouse (10)

Well, Saturday night the clouds rolled in right on cue again, so no luck. Last night we had some breaks in the clouds so I hauled to scope out. There were enough clouds moving quickly enough that I wasn't able to concentrate on any one particular star, planet. I'd just get Mars sighted in with...

    Adiaphora Alehouse (10)

Well, I am waiting on dark, because I just bought a nice telescope. I've had it for a week, and have had cloudy conditions ever since. Tonight looks promising for some star-gazing!

    Can someone explain Lutheran confession/absolution?

Hey jinc: I could never get fully on board with baptismal regeneration. Nor the idea that baptism is necessary to salvation. The idea that the layperson may have to perform a baptism in an emergency just sits wrong with me. If the person near death is one of God's sheep, they are perfectly safe...

    Can someone explain Lutheran confession/absolution?

I was just wondering if I recalled correctly. My mind is gettin' old. ;)
