    Not to hijack your thread OP, but i have a question to ask relevant to σ bonds. Take BeF2. Beryllium makes two sigma bonds with the two fluorides. My question is... Why if Berylium has two electrons in its outer shell, does it not make ionic bonds, and it makes covalent ones?
