    church attire

I wear the same business casual clothes I wear to work. I prefer that our daughter wear at least nice pants, not jeans. (though sometimes that doesn't work; she's growing so fast!) I don't consider it legalistic. It's not REQUIRED. It's a setting-apart thing. I worship God and pray, as...

Which other denomination could you be?

I came to Lutheran doctrine through Bible study and the Book of Concord by way of Reformed/Presbyterian upbringing. I have met people who, when we really get to talking about doctrine, I could classify as Lutheran even though they stay in their Anglican, Roman Catholic churches. They focus on...

    Why makes/keeps you Lutheran?

    1) Why are you Lutheran (vs. Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox)? Because in my study of scriptures, and church history and doctrine, the Lutheran doctrines seem most Christ-centered and Scripture-based. 2) What branch of Lutheranism do you follow? Confessional (LCMS) 3) If you converted to...

How often do you wear the cross?

I wear mine all the time.

    New to Lutheranism. But Pre-trib.

Emphasis mine... I remember well when I was first introduced to millennialism in college. It was in a non-denom youth group, where a lot of us had study Bibles... but the only study Bibles out there at the time that had extensive notes (as opposed to just textual notes) were ones like the...

Explaining Lutheranism to a Baptist Friend

My husband came from a Baptist background (I was Reformed). It took him a while to understand the difference between God doing to baptizing (adopting us) vs. us acting (being obedient). Our daughter was baptized at 4 years old.. old enough for him to feel somewhat confident that she understood...

Bible for my 8 and 7 year olds

I'm not a child, but for long-passage reading, I love the CEV (not the CEB, as I found out when I Googled it...). Perhaps it's the single-column format. When I'm focused on word study, or topical study, I stick with the ESV. But I do find the CEV very easy to read for longer passage readings.

    Religion or relationship?

I'm a convert to Lutheranism, from Presbyterian. I did a stint in a non-denom in college where the focus was very much on your relationship with God -- how strong it was, what you were doing to "feed" and "nurture" it, what the fruit was in your life, etc. I've come to realize that Lutheran...

    Lutheran Culture

Visiting my in-laws' Presbyterian church (and I was Presbyterian for almost 40 years) then coming back to my LCMS church I notice the following: The service is almost exactly the same in the general order of worship However, there is much more congregational participation in the Lutheran...

    We got married.

Very cool. You did indeed get married in my church! (confirmation that I'm not COMPLETELY crazy...) Again, congratulations. I wish you both every happiness

    I think I am excited!

You will not be alone. I know a number of Episcopalians who have found homes in the LCMS. Welcome!

    We got married.

Congratulations! I am very pleased the two of you are together. I remember reading some of your discussions online, and thinking you might make a great pair together. Although I must say the pictures rather shocked me... I could swear that's my church! Were you married in Maryland?

Rewriting the 10 Commandments? I'm speechless!

I agree. I think these "rewrites" could be useful in addition to the Ten Commands as teaching tools to explain them. I don't think they stand on their own at all.

    Cross Denomination Relationships

I think it also depends on how "religious" the people are, and how important doctrine is to them. The trouble with that is that oftentimes over the course of a marriage, spiritual issues become more or less important, and you don't always know at the beginning which way it will go. My husband...

    ELCA turns away young people

I remember going to an older Lutheran church and noticing that there were these strange hook-like things on the backs of the pews, along with the shelf-things for hymnals and Bibles. But the hooks were only on the left side pews. Come to find out, when the church was gender-segregated, the...

Rewriting the 10 Commandments? I'm speechless!

This sounds to me very similar to the aim of the Small Catechism; to teach the broader meaning behind the Commandments in a way that really hits it home to us in day-to-day situations. That being said, if I used this I would use it ALONG WITH the Ten Commandments, not instead of. Just as I...

    Christianity and gayness

You have a point. I think homosexuality is seen as a "worse sin" because there is a huge divide between those who think it is sin and those who do not. We all pretty much agree that killing and stealing and lying are sins (if we acknowledge such a thing as sin at all), so while they are still...

    High, Low...up down all around

My LCMS church in Maryland is very liturgical (both services). We even use the Order of Matins on fifth Sundays! I love being able to explain to my daughter the changing of the paraments as the year progresses, and the symbolism of the various vestments the pastor wears. I think the symbolism...

    saints and the like....

I agree that prayer is worship and should be directed only to God. That being said, the church calendar does have certain saints' (small "s") and commemoration days, and you may hear them mentioned in the sermon or in the collect (the prayer for that day). The Treasury of Daily Prayer often...

... me becoming Lutheran? ... what do you think?

I was born and raised Presbyterian. Studied the Reformed confessions and catechisms. Ordained an elder; served as a Stephen minister. But the more I studied Scripture and doctrine, the more I got hung up on some of those TULIP leaves. When we moved about 10 years ago and looked around for a...
