Craptastic guitar music in Church, you can keep your Protestant Music, Alonso! No guitar bands in the Temple of God!

This reminds me of a curious discussion. I attended a church once in which a piano was typically used to accompany the singing in one service. When the pianist was absent a member played his acoustic, not electronic, guitar. Another member was upset with the guitar and went to an elder in the church and suggested to him that modern instruments should not be used to accompany singing in the assembly of the believers. I told him that I entirely agreed and that we should banish the piano, which, historically, is the new kid on the block of musical instruments, and keep the guitar, which has a very long and noble history.

While for non-church music the guitar is perfectly fine; however, it is not suitable or suited for worship. Let's stick with the best instrument God gave us to utilise in Church: the human voice. That is enough for the Church for centuries upon centuries, it's alright for the whole lot of us!

for us I think, musical instruments are fine for Orthodox music, just so long as they are not for Liturgical use. I know many an Orthodox musician who has written all kinds of stuff for that kinda music (Arvo Part, Fr Justin Matthews, Ron Ephraim Moore, etc), and they often pour Orthodox spirituality in what they write.

That said, the western rite does use the organ at times to assist with the singing, though it isn't the focus of the service. In some African cultures (within the Orthodox Church) tamborines are used. Would you say they are going against the church to do that?

not at all, I meant more in general. instruments are certainly not forbidden, but there are reasons they are avoided liturgically.
