Hey everyone, Im Maddie. Im pretty young, only 18. Ever since I was around maybe 12 Ive had atheist beliefs. This came from after taking classes about evolution, meeting friends who had similar beliefs and more. I have been taught about christianity but have always thought it wasn't "real" and the people who lived by it were sort of..slaves to their religion. As Ive gotten older Ive been thinking that maybe there IS a God, but i don't really know how to go about those feelings. Everyone I know knows that Im atheist and many of the people Im around are as well. So, what should I do to get started? How can I know for sure that There IS a God (I like to believe in things only if i can prove them). Im starting to think Im too far gone. Is there hope??

Hey Maddie welcome to this site c:
You are not too far gone. He will never turn away anyone who comes to Him or seeks after Him. In fact, He encourages it. For me, I think watching this particular video has been inspiring and helpful. I've watched it countless times to be honest. It's not boring and it keeps you engaged. I think his passion and the fact that he's around our age group helps us to relate more to him. Anyway, really hope you give this video a chance. I've fast-forward it for you so it should start somewhere at around 52:17. I kind of want to watch it again, haha. It's that good.

Here's a song I'd like you to listen to as well ♥

I talk with pagans, agnostics and atheist frequently with this type of approach:

God loves his creation because he fathered it, as the Greek philosophers would say: “We are God’s children”.

I will try to address you logically, but there is a base we need to establish:

The problem is there is no quick answer.

I will address this “generally” and then you can ask specific questions.

Generally:

Without getting to philosophical: “Something has had to always exist since it is illogical to think something comes from nothing. Now some atheists have tried to get around this by saying nothing is really “something” and there is no such thing as really “nothing”. The bottom line is there has always been something. Now did that something at least include intelligence or was it just mass/energy/time/space? The problem with “excluding” intelligence is there appears to be a huge amount of intelligence that went into the design of this universe and life that makes it virtually impossible to happen by random “luck”. If there is one thing we have learned it is: “the more we know the more we realize we do not know”, so that means an ever increasing complex universe and the more complex it is the more random chances you need to make the right conditions without intelligence and the more likely scenario is there was intelligence involved.

If there is this eternal intelligence it would be at the epitome of the best it could be and not in the process of improvement. It would be the ultimate bad or good but not somewhere in-between. Why be bad when He can be good just as easily? The ultimate “good” would be what is called Godly type Love (to be defined later) and is totally unselfish type Love. Since this God would be able to direct our thinking, why would He have us think of him as being totally bad, when He could make us think bad was good and thus He would be worthy of praise? If God were bad and we praise a “Good God” than we are not praising Him.

Why would God have a totally unselfish type of Love, since He personally would not get anything out of it? If God’s “Love” is some kind of knee jerk reaction, then it is really meaningless (something like; gravity which is nice to have, but everyone automatically has it). God Loves us in spite of what we have done, who we are or what we will do, so it has to be by His choice.

If there is this Creator of the universe out there, His “creations” could not really “do” anything for Him, so this Creator would have to be seen as a Giver (Unselfish Lover) and not trying to “get” something from His creation.

So God would create the right universe for the sake of the individuals that will accept His gift (the most powerful force in all universes that compels even God to do all He does) and become like He is (the greatest gift He could give).

What keeps the all powerful Creator from just giving whatever He wants to his creation?

There are just something even an all-powerful Creator cannot do (there are things impossible to do), the big inability for us is create humans with instinctive Godly type Love, since Godly type Love is not instinctive. Godly type love has to be the result of a free will decision by the being, to make it the person’s Love apart from God. In other words: If the Love was in a human from the human’s creation it would be a robotic type love and not a Godly type Love. Also if God “forces” this Love on a person (Kind a like a shotgun wedding) it would not be “loving” on God’s part and the love forced on the person would not be Godly type love. This Love has to be the result of a free will moral choice with real alternatives (for humans those alternatives include the perceived pleasures of sin for a season.)

This Love is way beyond anything humans could develop, obtain, learn, earn, pay back or even deserve, so it must be the result of a gift that is accepted or rejected (a free will choice).

An unselfish God would be doing all He can to help willing individuals to make that free will decision to accept His Love. Again, since God will not be forcing these individuals, they have to be willing (it is their choice) and God cannot “make” them willing since that is robotic action. God can only at best make them free will agent (like God is) and capable of make the right decision without the selection being worthy of anything (it is a gift of pure charity).

This “Love” is much more than just an emotional feeling; it is God Himself (God is Love). If you see this Love you see God.

Let me just give you an example of How God works to help willing individuals.

All mature adults do stuff that hurts others (this is called sin) these transgressions weigh on them burden them to the point the individual seeks relief (at least early on before they allow their hearts to be hardened). Lots of “alternatives” can be tried for relief, but the only true relief comes from God with forgiveness (this forgiveness is pure charity [grace/mercy/Love]). The correct humble acceptance of this Forgiveness (Charity) automatically will result in Love (we are taught by Jesus and our own experience “…he that is forgiven much will Love much…”). Sin is thus made hugely significant, so there will be an unbelievable huge debt to be forgiven of and thus result in an unbelievable huge “Love” (Godly type Love).

If the nonbeliever had knowledge of God's existence that person would not need faith in God's existence, but faith is needed for humility and humility is needed to humbly accept pure charity and the only way to get Godly type Love is through accepting it as pure charity in the form of forgiveness.

That is an introduction to a huge topic.

Definitely not too far gone! Jesus specializes in such cases. I think He takes particular pleasure in them. :) Read the parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15.

Some Bible reading would be great. The Gospel of Mark is a good place to start. Then maybe John. A good intro to the basics, like C. S. Lewis' Mere Christianity, and then his The Great Divorce or The Screwtape Letters would be great as well.

I never tire of watching testimonies online. Here is my fave, about a former militant Muslim scholar.

Too far gone? If someone like Saul in the book of Acts can be turned from being the biggest enemy of Christianity into one of the greatest proponents of Christianity, then there's no way YOU could be too far gone! God takes us as we are when we come to Him, and then works with us from there. There's no such thing as being too far gone, or not good enough.

I would suggest you find a gospel preaching church and start attending regularly....you can learn a lot from a good sermon or sunday school/bible study group. Visit some churchs, listen closely, ask questions, and pray. The Holy Spirit can guide you where you need to be.....

Hi Maddie,

I've got some Good News, and I've got some bad news.

First the Good News. God loves you just as the Bible says He does in the New Testament. Jesus died for your sins and is reaching His hand of love out to everyone so that, if they will, they'll grab hold to it for eternal life.

Now... ...the bad news. As a philosopher, I've really got to say that you're going to have to challenge your own epistemological assumptions. Perhaps you've heard of "epistemology" from your atheist friends or acquaintances, but in case you haven't heard of it, it is the field of philosophy that (basically) has to do with the means and reasons by which we claim to have knowledge about the world. Some aspects of this field are connected to psychology and have to do with how we perceive and understand the world, as well as how we justify our ideas about the world as we evaluate our thoughts about it.

To keep this short, you're going to have to do a little studying to see how the field of epistemology comes to bear upon the whole idea of "proof." This is the practical side of being open spiritually. ...the other side of being open spiritually is to just ask God in prayer, in the way that you feel best able to, to help you come to see the truth of the Christian faith. This is where I recommend you need to begin.

Peace

THE MAGIC BULLET:

First, let me tell you a little about who I am: I have been a Teaching Follow at Harvard in Classics and New Testament, have been a Theology professor for 12 years, and a UMC pastor since 1994, retiring on July 1, 2015. I have had electrifying spiritual and paranormal experiences that rescued me from faith-crushing doubt and unbelief. But I believe that second hand spirituality rarely works: you need your own self-authenticating experiences of God's reality and power. My only goal for posting this is to help you have your own life-changing powerful experiences of God's reality and presence.

That said, suppose I guaranteed that you yourself would experience the reality of the Risen Christ to your satisfaction, if you met certain conditions. I have never known these conditions to fail, if they are actually met! You just could be the first exception! Would you be willing to pay the price of striving to meet those conditions, if the conditions seemed reasonable or, if not, to share honestly the reasons for declining? If you agree to this challenge, would you be willing to post weekly updates on what you are or are not experiencing and thinking as this experiment progresses? You could, for example, start a new thread for your experience in the pursuit of each condition. I will lay out and explain each condition, if you agree to the challenge.

Hey everyone, Im Maddie.

Hello, Maddie. Welcome to CF!

Ever since I was around maybe 12 Ive had atheist beliefs. This came from after taking classes about evolution, meeting friends who had similar beliefs and more.

How well-equipped at twelve do you think you were to properly evaluate the arguments for and against God? Are you aware that the ToE doesn't disprove God? They aren't mutually exclusive things.

As Ive gotten older Ive been thinking that maybe there IS a God, but i don't really know how to go about those feelings.

Well, if God is who He says in the Bible that He is, then you should be able to have a direct, personal experience of Him. I have that every day. We talk. We walk. He convicts me, comforts me, strengthens, provides, and illuminates my understanding. The longer I walk with God, the more I see that He isn't just a part of my life but the fundamental substance of it. But just as God has made Himself real to me, He must do the same for you. And He will. His way, though, not yours. That's the first thing we have to get straight about truly walking with God: It's all His way, not ours. What else should we expect when it comes to God? Anyway, simply ask God to make Himself real to you. And keep asking until He does. I'll warn you, though, that how you think that will happen and how it actually happens may be two VERY different things. Have no doubt, however: If you want to know your Creator, really know Him, He will reveal Himself to you. It's what He made you for.

How can I know for sure that There IS a God (I like to believe in things only if i can prove them). Im starting to think Im too far gone. Is there hope??

How can you know for sure that there is a God? See above.

What do you think you can prove, exactly? What do you mean by "prove"?

No, you aren't too far gone. The ones who are never wonder if they are. So, yes, there is hope. Much hope.

Selah.

I believe in evolution, I also believe in creationism as they are both logically possible due to insufficient evidence of evolution. To find God look to yourself as modern religion has become a barren wasteland of self sustained human created belief systems. God is real, it does not require belief as belief can take you anywhere it wants to, I can believe trees are purple instead of green and water taste like grapejuice or I could look outside, drink some water and know for sure. Looking to religion to find God is like looking to a blind man to explain colors. If this offends any religious people that simply proves they lack forgiveness and therefore, God. Those who do know God cannot argue with each other over him because they're on the same page, they're aware of exactly the same truth.

Maddie, Deadworm is right about your having your own life-changing experience of God's reality and presence.

Finding the truth about God and His way of redeeming us back to Himself is an experience that you must have for yourself. Christians can explain their experience to you, but you cannot understand that "experience" until YOU have it.

I don't know the "conditions" Deadworm will suggest that you meet so that you have the Christian "experience," but I can testify that my Christian "experience" was the result of my searching for the truth about God & about finding real "belief" that literally changed my life as God Himself brought me out of the darkness of unbelief into the light of the truth of the Gospel message found in His Word, the Holy Bible. The following scripture describes the "condition" that led me to find the truth about God that I was desperately seeking.

This scripture, Jeremiah 29:13, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” says that if you earnestly search after God you will find Him. God is not hiding from anyone. He can be found in the Bible. I found Him in the Book of John, the Gospel of John.

If you will search for God in the way suggested in the above scripture some day you will read something, or hear a sermon, or maybe someone will say something, or whatever God decides to use to "turn on the light" for you and you will "get it." He will bring you out of your darkness of unbelief and you will know He is real. He did that for me. That is my Christian "experience."

I'm not a Christian. I fully support you in your spiritual search, whichever result you come to. Just please stay open and honest, and do not rush to accept anybody's opinion. Find yourself first and foremost - who you truly are!

Maddie, when you find yourself to be lost, uncertain, hopeless, helpless, and desperate to find peace in Christ, then you will be ready to begin an earnest search for Him in His Word.
This scripture, Jeremiah 29:13, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” says that if you earnestly search after God you will find Him.

Well, it's you know what you can prove, not believe what you can prove.

To believe in something is to only know in part, a small part. But it's more hoping in something than knowing anything.

So what do you think? Give Jesus a whorl, I did and.....(It didn't work out) But I could be wrong, you could be wrong, the whole planet could be wrong.

Who knows, make your own mind up:)

First of all you are not "too far gone" the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. The fact that you are thinking about God is a step in the right direction. The journey towards God is different for everyone so I can't comment on your views since I'm not you.

Two things that help me, and this is my view, there is a difference between belief and religion.

I could follow a religion but not believe. And people do.

Religion is a structure to help guide and organise you, belief is personal.

I just prayed for you in Jesus" Name, John 14:13-14. God is real, He is our Creator, it says so in Genesis 1:26, it says He is in you 1st John 4:4 and He knew you before you were in the womb bringing you out to His Plan and Purpose for your life. Jeremiah 1:5. Read these scriptures and ask God to show you the Truth. Amen.
