In materials titled "The Meeting Point: Project For Affective and Sexual Formation," the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family aims to provide sex-ed resources based on Catholic teaching that avoid twin problems of teaching youth too much about sex, and telling them too little.

I don't think it will be in this case. My comments were more regarding the biology of sex, realistic statistical analysis of methods of prevention of STDs and pregnancy and also the performance of the sex acts. There are an awful lot of people who grow up without learning how to actually have good sex. Many figure it out through experimentation, masturbation, and multiple partners, but some people - primarily women and often ones with conservative values - never figure it out. If I had a dollar for every time I heard "I didn't know I was a squirter" or "I never had an [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] until I was 30" I'd have like 10 dollars. Life is way to short to endure bad sex.

I haven't read them yet but I had very good sex education in a Catholic school I hope they're similar.

I felt like the sex Ed we had in Catholic religion class was quite comprehensive. There are certainly good programs out there.

I figured the Church did a bang-up job as they generally do but was waiting to read it myself to really comment. Seeing an admonishment against it from the ugly liars at lifesitenews makes me that much more certain that this is a fine piece that will please the Lord greatly.

I saw lifesites objections the other day and they are just insane. Their quality of journalism has been sinking over the last few years and their, almost not veiled at all, negativity toward the Vatican is distasteful.

Yet their objections seem like good reasonible objections
  • Handing the sexual formation of children over to educators while leaving parents out of the equation.
THAT IS NOT GOOD
  • Failing to name and condemn sexual behaviors, such as fornication, prostitution, adultery, contracepted-sex, homosexual activity, and masturbation, as objectively sinful actions that destroy charity in the heart and turn one away from God.
THE SIN OF OMMISION TO NOT CONDEMN IS TO PROMOTE
  • Failing to warn youths about the possibility of eternal separation from God (damnation) for committing grave sexual sins. Hell is not mentioned once.
BASIC TENANT OF THE FAITH IGNORED
  • Failing to distinguish between mortal and venial sin.

  • Failing to speak about the 6th and 9th commandment, or any other commandment.

  • Failing to teach about the sacrament of confession as a way of restoring relationship with God after committing grave sin.

  • Not mentioning a healthy sense of shame when it comes to the body and sexuality.

  • Teaching boys and girls together in the same class.
  • Having boys and girls share together in class their understanding of phrases such as: “What does the word sex suggest to you?”
  • Asking a mixed class to “point out where sexuality is located in boys and girls.”
  • Speaking about the “process of arousal.”
  • Using sexually explicit and suggestive images in activity workbooks (here, here, and here).
  • Recommending various sexually explicit movies as springboards for discussion (see below for links).
  • Failing to speak about abortion as gravely wrong, but only that it causes “strong psychological damage.”
  • Confusing youths by using phrases such as “sexual relationship” to indicate not the sexual act, but a relationship focused on the whole person.
  • Speaking of “heterosexuality” as something to be “discover[ed].”
  • Using gay icon Elton John (while not mentioning his activism) as an example of a gifted and famous person.
  • Endorsing the “dating” paradigm as a step towards marriage.
  • Not stressing celibacy as the supreme form of self-giving that constitutes the very meaning of human sexuality.
  • Failing to mention Christ’s teaching on marriage.
  • Treating sexuality as a separate subject instead of as something integrated into the doctrinal and moral teachings of the Church.
I Will be honest i have not seen the programme infornation but if it does line up like these things then i think it is right to question it.

Well except the program does not do half of what they are saying. I looked at their petition the other day and just last night read through the whole program. And their petition is junk. Either they misrepresent (slightly or greatly depending on the point) the classes. Or they make assumptions not validated by the material. Or they bring a kind of personal prudishness into it and hold it up as somehow the way it should be.

I would be wary.
I think the church has a ways to go yet when it comes to trusting them with our children
especially in this area of sexual education.

for example, each parish is supposed to have established guidelines for all childcare workers in dealing with children, and the requirement is that all childcare givers must pass this instruction before being placed in a position of caring for children in the church.

and now we have a news article that says there are places in the Catholic church where this has been slow to be implimented. When we combine this slowness with the idea of the Church teaching sex ed classes....I think that's putting the cart before the horse.

Let's get the 'in house' problems with sex fixed first, before we start teaching our children how to handle their own sexuality.
