depends on what is around you. but you can never go wrong doing lay services until you can get a priest. in fact, most of the daily cycle can be found in certain prayer books.
Thanks for the reply. I never considered that despite all the Catholic, Anglican and Protestant Churches locally, there is not a single Orthodox Church.

It seems to be an obstacle for potential members, have any of you experienced this?

bummer, if that is the nearest, I would message the priest and let him know your situation. he might be able to hook you up (even if only once and again, it's still something)
Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the time you took to.

It's a tricky subject. To see a Divine Liturgy for the first time will make a trip worth it.

Without a priest you can do the entire Liturgy of the Hours, and instead of a Divine Liturgy you can do a "Typika." If you wanted to do full services instead of wjat younwould fond in, say, the Jordanville Prayer Book, you would want an Unabbrevoated Horologion, or another horologion; the Unabbreviated Horologion is available in iBooks.

That's really helpful, thank you.

I'll have a look into the recommended resources.

Here is a Typika designed to be read by a lay person. If there is an Orthodox Church available, it isn't meant to be a substitute, but it is helpful when there isn't one close enough to attend. Our priest suggests that we use this when we are sick or snowed in.

Having looked at the weather forecast for tomorrow I doubt if I will be able to get to Church tomorrow - I've just messaged my Priest telling I'm this [ and I carry the Church keys and open up in the mornings:( ]

There's no way I'm driving cross country with heavy rain and very high winds , on an exposed road with lots of roadworks being done.

I expect I'll be saying the Hours and then reading Typica.
