I do not recall of ever hearing of the girl or the song.

Is this one of those things where it was famous in Great Britain but never head of in The States, she may have been big in Japan or something.

According to Wikipedia, she had a few top 20 hits in the US in the 60s, with this one getting number 12.

I haven't bothered listening to the song or looking for the lyrics, but I'd hazard a guess that the views in the song expressed about single girls are more applicable to the 60s than they are today.

The single girl all alone in a great big town
The single girl gets so tired of love letting her down
The life's unreal and the people are homely
And the nights can get so lonely
The single girl needs a sweet loving man to lean on
I'm a single girl wondering if love could be passing her by
I'm a single girl and I know all about men and their lies
Nobody loves me cause nobody knows me
Nobody takes the time to go slowly

The single girl needs a sweet loving man to lean on
I gotta make my own way
There's rent I gotta pay
I need a night-time love to get me through the day
I'm a single girl all alone in a great big town
I'm a single girl and I get so tired of love letting me down
But there's a man I've yet to know
Waiting somewhere I've yet to go
Someday I'll have a sweet loving man to lean on

Sandy Posey is an american country singer. It was her big hit, back in the 60s. Of course I wasn't born then. I found it on the 'sad songs' CD compilation and immediately liked it.

Apparently was an anthem for single girls and very popular as it was just so relatable it was written by Martha Sharp. Who, I have no idea, but thats what it says in the lyrics page.

I think that by the end she's so down on herself for being single, and tired of lying cheating men, but then hopeful theres ONE man who will be sweet to her she has 'yet to know'. The thing is, did she actually KNOW all those other men. Maybe she was an 'easy girl'.

Many single women leave home to go work in the big city and are so vulnerable to predators. This is because they haven't found a man to marry, cos if they did, they wouldn't be all alone in a great big town, knowing nobody.

I once went to a big city where I didn't know a soul.

hmm yes things were different back in the 60s I gather as women didn't have much education opportunities and thus mostly had low paid jobs that probably didn't cover the rent.

But now you have songs like this...

and the sequal, but I won't post the vid cos its horrible to look at

This part of the song seems to contradict itself. If she's making her own way then she doesn't need a man to support her.

As for this bit:

There's rent I gotta pay
I need a night-time love to get me through the day

Maybe it was intended to be entirely innocent and was viewed that way when the song was released, but it does sound a lot like she's sleeping with with the guy in return for him paying her bills.

How come the men all of a sudden became lying cheaters, maybe the song writer is the liar but blaming it on the men like so many women that I know. Maybe the song writer is out drinking and whoring all night and when the men find out what she is they leave her and so she calls them liars but in reality she is just an easy woman. I mean why did she not stay home and marry a high school sweetheart like normal girls did instead of picking up and going to the big city looking for a worldly rich man? Maybe its because she partied too much back home and no good guy would have her so she had to leave but her old habbits remain with her and no good big city guy would have her either.

Lyrically, it's a stupid song. I don't think it's a song that a Christian woman should really care about or be getting ideas about life from. If you are meeting the wrong kind of men that lie and cheat, then maybe you aren't going to the right places or you are attracted to the wrong kind of man. Not all men act like that. This song is like an episode of Sex and the City put to song. Half of it is about a girl claiming to be strong and independent and then the other half is about her crying that she doesn't have a man and can't make it in life. I don't think her father should be protecting her from life if she's an adult, but she should be following God and not be an insecure sniveling whiner who is obsesed that she is single. Her plight is a very worldly one. It was relevant to a 60's woman, but today, no not at all. Single women are able to be educated, have a career , chose to enter into a romantic relationship that is not detrimental, work in a city, support herself, and generally be an adult.

High school sweetheart..hmm i wish.
How many people actually marry their high school sweethearts? Well I know of one lady in my bible study who married her high school sweetheart who she said she HATED in primary school lol. It was mutual.

I cant really remember any boys from high school ...although...there was one in intermediate that seemed to like me, but he didnt go to my highschool. Also my best friend in highschool decided to go where i was going because the boy she had a crush on went to there. But they didnt end up going together. Funny. I dont even know is shes married now.
