JT, look at my 'avatar'. It is the logo on my card and the front of my house. If you walked into my church and remembered that, you'd know me immediately. I've been known to 'put people off' a bit also.

Truthfully, I'm a little 'put off' by any man with earrings (unless he has a parrot and an eye-patch as well). However, this is more than likely my upbringing and 'personal' (including family, Marine Corps time and career) tradition rather than any bit of theology or doctrine I've acquired touching on the subject.

I only ask, if I met you and seem a bit 'hesitant' - you extend to me the same courtesy of wait and see before you decide what sort of nincompoop I am as you would expect of me. I will do my utmost not to throw my hands in the air and run away screaming "Saints preserve us! He's got earrrrrrrrings!"
Fact is, so many men wear them, and young men today don't even remember a time when men didn't.

Yes, that's true. There are some young people who still think men shouldn't wear earrings but men have been wearing them for a long time (regularly since the 80's at least) so it would be a normal thing for them to see or acknowledge guys who wear earrings but it doesn't mean they think that men should wear them

We were driving my son's friend home, I was driving and my wife was in the passenger seat and the friend was in the back seat (my son didn't go). the friend asks me as we're driving. "do you have your ear pierced?" and my wife says in a drole voice "yeeees" and I said "yes" quickly wondering where this is going.then he asks "you have both ears pierced?" and my wife again says "yeeees" in a drawn out voice.
I reckon you guys by this time were all smiling, either outwardly or inwardly. It's so mainstream now.

Actually I was thinking "where is this conversation going?" as I knew my wife wasn't thrilled with my earrings and didn't want her to say anything negative to the kid. I was happy that he asked as he did notice that I had them. I think a lot of people notice my earrings but don't say anything (what can they say, really? you're right it is very mainstream nowadays)

My son goes to a different high school than this kid, so I don't know if the kid ever got his ear(s) pierced over the summer. It would be cool if he did, but I'll never know. He probably thinks I'm like the coolest dad ever for wearing earrings.

I guess whether he did or didn't have it done in the end is kind of secondary; it's pretty widespread as a custom now, and not only for girls.

Did you think that your wife saying 'yeees' 2 times in the way she did, sounded negative? I mean, you must know, but I took it at first that you meant she was kind of smiling about it.

Oh, yes it was negative. she knows that I know she's not impressed with my earrings, but she's resigned herself that I'm an adult and can make my own decisions not matter how silly they look to her. If she was smiling it wasn't a happy smile but a rueful smile.

but you're right, it is a pretty widespread custom for boys/men to pierce their ears, I wish it was a little more widespread. I'm at work and just before I came on here I was in the cafeteria here at my workplace and was talking with a supervisor from a different department. He's a guy maybe in his 40's or maybe late 30's. He had small thick silver hoops, one in each ear. it looked pretty cool. as we were talking I saw him glance at my earlobes but didn't say anything. I hope he thought that my earrings were cool too. it's almost like an unspoken brotherhood. there are about 5 or 6 guys here who wear earrings. all wear them in both ears. I just wish more guys would get their ears pierced.

Well, your wife is indeed entitled to her preferences, bless her!

But of course if she knows those 5 or 6 coworkers she'll be aware that all 6 or 7 of you have had it done in both ears and that for guys to do it is rather unremarkable and normal. I think it's all rather more low key than she maybe thinks, idk.

Yes, I saw some research on that, men have been wearing earrings for as long as women, it was only in the last 100 years or so that it went out of fashion for men. its only in that time that earrings got a "feminine" connotation. that is slowly reversing but there are still a lot of people who think that earrings are feminine only accessory.

it wasn't that long ago that only men wore pants and women wore skirts or dresses. Now women's pant are an (almost) universally accepted fashion choice. so fashion does change, but like I said it's slow for things like men's earrings. it's been about 30 years (in the 80's) where earrings for men became common and though it is almost universally acceptable for men to wear earrings, there are still those who have the old fashioned notion that they are for women only.

she's just an "old soul" who thinks earrings look feminine on guys. she's always thought that way. I don't think she'll ever change even if she sees a guy with earrings and they don't look feminine. Whenever we're out somewhere and I see a guy with earrings I'm hoping that my wife will notice and one day think "hmm, maybe they aren't so feminine looking" but it might be a long wait...

Well I think it's a perfectly natural choice. If an adolescent young man - like half the guys in high school or working in the supermarket or serving in a coffee shop - happens to want to have it done also, then I think it's all pretty natural and straightforward; while in theory parents can say no, yet the desire to do it in itself is perfectly natural and widespread, and maybe the wisest thing for parents to do it to keep it pretty low key, one way or the other.

To me it depends on the earrings, some earrings have quite a masculine look... 'course it probably dosen't help that a lot of the ones I like for myself fall in that category:p
Seems that you do quite like the idea of men with earrings, the idea of your man with rugged studs in his ears.

So he would wear something like this, then?

pinterest dot com

those are very cool looking earrings IMHO. I would wear those if they looked good on me. Right now i just wear studs as they suit me, but the hoops in the pic are very masculine looking.

I think it's very clear that earrings can be a very masculine article of wear.

These days also there is a generation of young men who don't even remember a time when very widely some men did not wear earrings.
