I recently received the gift of tongues.

I have been desiring this gift(and all the gifts) for a long while. But I recently learned some things I didn’t know before. Then we were doing a prayer ministry and I applied some of the things I had learned. When we were praying and laying hands on parishioner's I began to pray in tongues.

It comes effortlessly now. I think that was my main issue before... I was trying to ‘do’ it myself instead of letting God and trusting God to work in 'concert' with me to do it.

Anyways... What an awesome God we have. Thank you Jesus for your wonderful gifts!

Who else has received this gift?

I'm not familiar with this area at all...how does that work? What do you mean when you say you began to pray in tongues? Were you speaking another language? And what did you learn that you didn't know before?
Hey Kenny.... sorry I have not been able to reply as I have been very busy. But you can start to learn about the gifts of the Spirit, like praying in tongues, by reading 1 Corinthians. There are are other scriptures as well but I don't have them off the top of my head. In short... Yes! Praying in a different language. It is an awesome gift. I pray that you desire His gifts and that you receive His gifts! I will be back next week and can hopefully add to this conversation.

The most significant thing I learned was that this gift is a 'cooperation' with God the Holy Spirit. First we need to desire and be open to receive His gifts. Second we need to participate with Him in manifesting this gift. One of the leaders at our church used an example that stuck with me. She used the example of when we talk to babies. We use a silly language but we speak with love. "Googoogaga" etc... You know how we do that with infants? She advised that this is how we need to approach God when manifesting this gift with Him. So, I tried it. And then the Holy Spirit sort of 'took over' for lack of a better word. It was like something in my belly bubbled up and I spoke it out. Now, it happens much more easily for me. It's a recognition that the Holy Spirit wants to work with me to pray to the Father. The joy that comes while praying in the Spirit is just awesome. St. Paul teaches us that this gift is mainly for our own edification.

I am so thankful God has allowed me this gift.

It's a great gift~!

This reminds me that I should not take it for granted. God gave it to me when I was a new Christian. In a lot of ways I think of it as part of my salvation, but it is additional to salvation like you said.

Three Ways the Gift of Tongues Happens!!!

- There is praying in tongues between you and God: 1 Corinthians 14:2
- There is speaking in tongues to the church, to address them when there is a spiritual interpreter. 1 Corinthians 14:27
- There is speaking in tongues to unbelievers in their native language, as a rare sign and wonder... but there are modern testimonies: Acts 2:4

It was a gift to me after being away for a long time. God is gracious. Unbelievably so. It comes to me when my heart wants to give thanks and my mind can't find words -- the holy spirit gives me the words to say.

I just discovered this thread. I used to attend a large Catholic/ Episcopal charismatic prayer group in Cambridge when I was a doctoral student there. The worship and fellowship was wonderful. But the Catholics and Episcopalians initially shared a joint Communion service. When the Catholic bishop discovered this, he forbade Catholics from participating. They needed to take Communion separately from their own priests. This change created hard feelings and a schism that broke this wonderful prayer group up.

For several years, I was a Protestant theology professor at a Catholic university. In the Spiritual Gifts section of this site, I am developing a thread on Spirit baptism and speaking in tongues. I invite readers of this thread to check out mine and participate.

That is correct. The Catholic church considers Anglican communion invalid since their priests do not have apostolic succession, and Anglicans cannot receive communion from Catholic priests since they are not Catholic. The problem could have been resolved by having a joint service. It sounds like some people let their hurt feelings get in the way of that.

I am praying for this gift. There doesn't seem to be a charismatic community where I live, so I'm trying to figure out how to go about it. I need the healing and deliverance that usually goes along with charismatic groups, too...praying God removes any obstacles and grafts me into His Heart where I can let the Spirit speak through me.

I believe God will grant you this gift. Be patient and trust Him. I specifically prayed for this gift for almost two years before receiving it. Admittedly there were times I felt very frustrated and disappointed. I wonder now if those times were attacks from the evil one. I think maybe so.

Personally, I don't think we should pray for any particular gift. I think we should pray that God will reveal to us what gift he has given us. Praying in tongues is the least of the gifts of the HS. You have probably been given something much more powerful!!!!

I agree we should pray for God's will and for Him to reveal what He has for us. For sure.
However Paul was speaking 'corporately' when he described tongues as 'the least' of the gifts. He wasn't diminishing it's value. Rather he was keeping it in perspective. That's how I understand Paul's teaching.

I signed up for that conference...praying for a strong anointing... I'm really struggling badly right now, and I know I have such a sense of peace and such a strength to resist and shun sin when I'm prayed over in tongues, or even when I'm close to the flowing of the Holy Spirit in charismatic praise and worship. He works powerfully in His own language! The power of words...?

Unfortunately, there isn't much of anything around me right now. I know God is close, I know He's taking care of me. But it's like I get so focused on the negative -- it's a terrible habit. Even knowing the good things God has done and the many positive changes -- how things are so much better than they used to be -- it's so hard for me to shake off this sense of despair, of doom and gloom. I know the devil is behind this false thinking and these oppressive feelings. Sometimes they don't even feel like mine, yet they're overwhelming. Anyway, I'm praying for strength, and to get through this to the good things I know God has planned for me...

You can learn to turn the negative around to the positive, it is an energetic mental practice, not dreamy easy. And it gives a powerful useful mental attribute perhaps even for others who hear you. It may be God brings the negative to mind. It can bring out a sweetness from you. You may able to see farther by this and become useful in Christian team work. Reality on Earth cannot be dealt with without the processing of negatives. Life on Earth has suffering.
