Curiosity is getting the better of me once again, so the time has come for me to pose a question for anyone who may be interested in answering.

What are your opinions and feelings on Joan of Arc? Do you view her as a heroine? A martyr? A rebel? A misfit? Do you believe she was controversial for the time in which she lived? Do you think she would have died so young if she did things differently? Is she to be respected? Was she a misunderstood individual? Give reasons, if you can.

For now, I see her as a young woman who fought to make her voice heard for her beliefs and convictions, which I personally find admirable. But I have to do a little more studying and research on her (as well as other famous historical figures) when I get the time.

I'd love to hear mainly from those here who identify mostly as conservative (though I welcome opinions from anybody). And please: be respectful and try to resist the urge to debate. I'm looking for straightforward answers so I can weigh them, analyze them, and some up with an ultimate conclusion on my own.

Also, I hope this thread is not deemed inappropriate in anyway. If so, moderators can lock, move, or delete at their discretion. I do not wish to cause trouble in any way here. I'm just a curious creature seeking to satisfy my craving for different opinions while this burning question is still on my mind. My apologies in advance.

I do not see her as a martyr in the Christian sense. Though pious, she died for her country, not for her faith. If she had been on the side of the English, would they have treated her the same way? No, and they too were Catholic.

She was definitely unconventional, and brave. I cannot speak for the validity of the visions she claimed to have.

Being as she lived in a war zone, she easily could have died anyway if she had done things differently.

I don't identify as conservative (or liberal).

Mark Twain wrote an excellent book on Joan of Arc. He considered it one of his best works. It is well researched and an excellent read. Find that and you will have much good material about her.

My opinion of her is that she is a saint, in fellowship with God as we speak. A heroine for her country. A martyr in that she refused to renounce her faith and was killed specifically because of that. The whole voices thing is strange, but that doesn't make them untrue. She was wrongly killed by English ecclesiastics who were standing in God's way.

it is interesting to read more about her

she was brave, but she was also very humble, not in this false modesty that treats error and truth as being equal
she know what was true and what was false
but she also understood her own smallness in the grand scheme of things
