And I don't want to go.

There's a fundraiser for the Catholic Foundation (I think) this Friday at one of the swanky resorts in town. My pastor bought a table for some of us parishioners who have had a long term of service. While in a way, I'm glad that I'm finally cashing in on all those masses I served and receiving something besides intangible religious benefits, but in another I'm kind of reluctant to go because they didn't have a seat for my wife so I have to go alone. I'm already drifting away from my parish, and I'm still peeved about the liturgies during Holy Week so I don't know how that would work out if the subject came up. And finally, I think it's weird to be going to a church function in such a ritzy place.

I think this might be a situation to apply what Fr. Ron in his book The Holy Longing calls a 'mellowness of heart.' Just relax Tad, enjoy the evening. It's OK.

How does your wife feel about it , Tad ?

There is an echo in the room... "Relax Tad, enjoy the evening. It's OK."

Thanks, Red Fox. That's my inclination. It helps to have a friend confirm it for me.

I would get buzzed enough to say things that would get me in trouble. That seems like the most profitable course of action all things considered.

LOL. That's an outrageously good idea. I was leaning towards that anyhow.

How does your wife feel about it , Tad ?

She didn't want to go anyway. She has informed me she's not the parish type. I'm sure she would feel claustrophobic if she went.

So are you thinking of going to a particular elsewhere, soon?

My pastor is very ill, the parish is going through some unfortunate changes and my wife and I are already in the habit of going to a larger, more traditional nearby parish. No specific plans until whatever is going on at my parish settles down.

I would have seen that as the main stumbling block .

From posts and photographs I know that you are a devoted , loving couple who have great respect for each other . And that brings me joy .

Hmmm. The old cynic in me thinks that every gift has its price.

Your pastor has bought you a ticket to a fundraiser? Is this really a 'thank you', or is it a 'these are the ones with deep pockets' event? If it were the former your wife would be included, but if the latter there is no benefit in having a spouse around; they don't get access to twice the money.

I think I would be tempted to say thanks but no thanks. I suspect there will be too much talk of fundraising going on to allow for any relaxing and enjoying.

That's very kind of you to say that, Colin. Thank you.
