A little late, but I've just decided to give up something else for the remainder of Lent.

Facebook. About 10 or so minutes ago I opened my Facebook app, started scrolling through my news feed, saw my friends and family sharing sexual jokes and pictures, memes that endorsed drunkenness, tons of swearing, hating this person and that person, etc etc, and I found myself blindly pressing the "like" button (especially for boobs, might I add... Hehehe), and then just kind of had an epiphany. It's all trash. It fills my mind with sexual images, cursing, hatred, lust, the desire to drink... All garbage. It's rotting my brain. So I'm letting it go. Who knows, maybe after Lent I might find that I don't miss it at all.

Kind of just cheated, but I needed to get one last thing posted to FB before I gave it up.

I don't think that FB is the problem--it's your friends list. I've lived in four states, and my friends and family--including two of my three adult children--live all over the country. To me, FB is a virtual family reunion and an opportunity to stay connected to the people I love.

With the right friends list, FB can be delightful and enriching.

Most of my friends and family are liberal atheists who delight in the world. I refuse to cut them out because they are sinners (so am I), but I can limit how much of the poison I take in.

That's what I meant about the double lives. We need to live in the world, but not become of it. It's hard and sometimes we have to choose which life we want to live.

That is the good FB provides. The internet in general serves a lot of good but it also can be an occasion of a lot of bad.

I don't think I live a double life though. I plead with God to take my drinking away even while I'm drinking. I say in my head, "Lord, have mercy" before every shot on the pool table. I ask for forgiveness for my lack of patience with people when I snap back, and I pray for the person. I also say "Lord, have mercy" when I see stuff on FB like this. I think a double life is being unrepentant 6 days a week and then being a Christian on Sundays. We are all sinners, and I think recognizing that doesn't equal a double life.
