"Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body." link

This adds an interesting component into this years presidential election, particularly if the Senate refuses to confirm any candidate that Pres. Obama nominates.

I go to post this, don't see it, and then you manage to get this posted before I get mine up.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in this election year. I can see the Senate "playing politics" and refusing to approve anyone Pres. Obama nominates to replace Justice Scalia. If they do, though, you have to wonder what kind of effect that might have on Republican candidates, particularly the Presidential candidate -- and doubly so if someone like Cruz is nominated, who is already blamed for shutting down the government because of politics. While it might energize the Republican base, it will also energize the Democrats, as well as possibly souring Independents on whichever party is viewed as having "played politics" with the nomination/approval process.

I just did some google fu on the Justices and apparently they have no constant protection or protection detail.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/us/supreme-court-justices-remain-security-exceptions.html?_r=0

Is it me, or is it weird how things don't make sense?

Sure, the Justices shouldn't have to have a motorcade everytime they go somewhere, but I find that fact that Justices don't have 24/7 protection extremely unnerving.

We have our so-called war on terror and the 9 highest members of our government who represent the top of a 3rd of our entire system of government are easy soft targets.

I remember having this debate with someone about 9/11. I argued that if you could go back in time to 1999 or 2000 that it would be impossible for you to prevent 9/11 simply because we are incapable of thinking logically about security and national defense. Until a tragedy happens, we just can't think in terms of prevention.

Imo, Justices should have 24/7 protection of at least 2 agents who are linked in to Law Enforcement and Law Enforcement (two police units minimum) should be within 2 minutes response time of a Justice at all times.

I suspect a lot of this is due to the justices desires. Living with a protection detail can have a huge impact on quality of life, particularly in just trying to live like a relatively normal person.

And it isn't like they are completely without protection. The Supreme Court Police have the responsibility for safeguarding the Justices, as well as the Supreme Court building. I believe this was supposed to be a "middle ground", ensuring that there are procedures in place, as well as security for Justices, as needed, without the issues caused by having Secret Service protection.

I imagine at higher terrorist threat levels that the Justices do have round the clock protection.

It is interesting to see God's Sovereign hand at work in this nation and the world at-large. I have no idea what God is doing in the United States, but it is interesting to see the lack of leadership in the Presidential race and now the loss of a Conservative, Constitutionalist, judge on the Supreme Court. I find myself looking around for any "writing on the wall."

Sorry to hear the news. Let's hope Obama picks a replacement quickly and that he/she can avoid the usual partisan drama...

It sounds like the political battle at all. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has come out and stated the Senate will not hold hearings on a Supreme Court nominee until after the election, and likely after the new Senate is seated in January.

This is going to become a huge campaign issue and, I suspect, one that harms Republicans more than helps them in the General election. It will reinforce the idea of a "do nothing" Congress that plays political games, rather than doing the work they are there to do.

"Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement Saturday afternoon, calling Scalia a man of God, a patriot and an "unwavering defender of the written Constitution."

"He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution,"
