There are several good ones in North America: St. Anthony's in Florence, St. Anthony's in Barstow, Vashon Island, St. Sabbas, Holy Trinity Jordanville...

Of course a more extreme ascecis would be found on Mount Athos or in Valaam, Russsia. This also might be found in St. Anthony's in Egypt or St. Mary of Sinai, or Mar Mattai in Iraq. Real risk of martyrdom, too.

Yikes Barstow! Spent enough time in the Mojave. :)

Yes Mar Matti is the monastery where they refuse to give up the high ground like Buford at Gettysburg.

Barstow is quite nice, actually. More pleasant than Florence, which is uninhabitable outside the walls of St. Anthony's. For some reason, the monastery grounds are pleasant and comfortable.

My knowledge of Orthodox monasteries comes from a friend who stayed in at one in Ukraine before he passed away. He was a guest given his health and economic status.

Wouldn't it be sinning to believe in "other" gods?

I have seen many men even beg for it, and have not received him.

God gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

Our trouble is that sometimes we get focussed on signs, or outward stuff. If a person has been taught, "when you receive the Holy Spirit you will cry/fall over/speak in tongues/jump up and down with excitement and feel different" and that doesn't happen, then the person will feel let down, disappointed or that God doesn't love them enough to give them his Spirit. The devil loves this, because then he can try to persuade them to give up and maybe not to bother with God. Focus on outward signs and emotions and you'll be disappointed. I should know; I was like that for years - sun is shining? Passed an exam? feel happy? Fantastic, that is "proof" that God loves me. But, difficult homework? Forget your coat and get caught in the rain? Get told off and friends ignore you? That was "proof" to me that I had displeased God somehow and he wasn't listening to me.
Same with baptism in the Spirit; if you ask God to fill you, expect that you HAVE to speak in tongues, and don't, how easy is it to think, "oh well that proves it; God hates me/I'm not good enough" etc. Like I said, the devil loves that - anything that takes our attention off God.

These people you know who begged for the Spirit; what were they like afterwards? Did they love Jesus? Did they want to read their Bibles to get to know him better? Were they more joyful/peaceful/kinder or whatever.
I've read about people who prayed to be filled with the Spirit, felt nothing and didn't believe anything happened. If someone was praying with them, they may even have told that person that "it didn't work". Only to find that other people noticed the change in them and said "what happened to you?" or that the gift of tongues, or whatever, followed later.

It is a command that also applies to us, even Jesus Christ cited this commandment when Satan tested him and told him to throw himself, yet Jesus recited this commandment, "you will not test the LORD your God". Anyone who tests God to try to get him to prove himself is sinning. If you call on the name of God, it is knowing that he is, and trusting him already, yet you call on him in complete desperation knowing that you are a sinner pleading for the mercy of God, not to get him to prove himself to you. That is wicked.

So when Gideon was told by an angel of the Lord that God was with him, asked for a sign, which was granted, laid 2 fleeces - "if you have spoken to me do this" - which were granted, and then was given another sign; what was that, and why was he given the signs if his requests were "wicked"?
God WAS with him, gave him all the signs and assurances he asked for and he DID defeat the Midianites.

The devil asked Jesus to throw himself off the mountain on purpose, so that God would send angels to catch him. He was being tempted to doubt that he was the Son of God, that God really was with him, and also to mis-use his power. Jesus KNEW that he was the Son of God, he also knew that God could rescue and help him and did not need to prove it to himself, never mind to the devil. It was the same on the cross, "if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross", Matthew 27:39. But Jesus knew who he was - and he also knew God's purpose for him, which was to die and reconcile man to God.

God assures his people and CAN give the signs, etc that they ask for. Sometimes he doesn't - because he wants us to exercise faith and trust in him, and what we already know of him, without the signs.

Any man that teaches that you can commit adultery and still be saved will be rebuked by me. Even your own catholic church agrees with me, and even excommunicates people from the church for certain sins such as this. It infuriates me to hear such false teachings, and these teachings are very common among the protestants, who are very sexually permissive, even concerning divorce and remarriage, even the allowance of contraceptives, which your very own catholic church also forbids.

Yes, that is true but, if you have been forgiven and dont commit adultery again then i very much hope and pray that your sould is saved.

What if, you've committed it only a few times, but after each time diligently seek to confess and forsake that sin?

In the Catholic church you are forgiven every time but, one cannot abuse the confessional!!

Wisdom that has been granted to me.

And it's possible that you sincerely believe that this wisdom is from God, and that you have been granted some special kind of knowledge, even without having the Holy Spirit.

But you are posting some very unorthodox statements on a Christian forum, while stating that your faith is Christian - i.e that you uphold the Nicene creed. You are pleading with us to be baptised in the Spirit, when you haven't been yourself, and believe that the Spirit is only an angel anyway. Yes, I KNOW you believe that, but like it or not, it is not a standard Christian belief.
Can't you see that we are therefore bound to question the source of this "wisdom" - or even to doubt that it exists at all?

So that would make cgaviria still a sinner and doomed because he has never received the Holy Spirit according to him ?

He has said that he has never been baptised in the Holy Spirit. I don't know if that means he is doomed; not, I think, as far as we are concerned, but maybe according to his own teaching.

You become perfected when you are born of God, why do you think Paul says,

The whole point of the death of Jesus Christ was not just to atone for sin once and for all, but also to bring an end to sin, and to perfect his people, since the blood of animals was never able to perfect, just only to atone for sins, and thus this prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus Christ,

And thus this is the reason why these verses exist,

The way the holy spirit causes a man to never sin again is by removing evil desires, which are the cause of sin, so if you had the desire to commit adultery, you will no longer have that desire, if you were a homosexual, you will no longer want to commit sins of homosexuality, and this truth is a fulfillment of this prophecy,

The heart is where the desires are, so by God removing your heart of flesh, he is removing your evil desires, and giving you a new heart, that has godly desires. How does he do this? By giving you his spirit, and not just any spirit, a new spirit, that was never given before, and that was because the blood of Jesus Christ had not yet been shed to bring forth this new spirit that brings forth perfection. And this prophecy then goes on to say, and "cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments", meaning you will obey God as a consequence of receiving this new holy spirit, and thus be perfected. When receiving holy spirit, this change is instant, hence why we even have an example when Saul has the holy spirit spring upon him,

Receiving holy spirit transforms you into a completely different person. If you are still sinning, you have not truly received holy spirit, hence,

The actual lie of the devil is that you can continue sinning and be right with God. Once you finally realize that you don't have holy spirit, then you ought to find out how you can truly attain him, and thus be freed from sin. No one that hasn't be baptized in holy spirit will be saved. So if you wish to attain salvation, you must work towards attaining this free gift.

Call me when you've arrived. I want to be the first to congratulate you.

Cgaviria the Holy Spirit is not a angel so no wounder you have not been baptised with the Lords Spirit, the Holy Spirit. You are missing out, as when we join with him we start to learn how to become one with him. It's love making. We go deeper into his spirit and he goes deeper into ours. We become one with him, or truth be told as we die we can start to question who am I really?
