Thats good to know about kenshin. Because i plan on watching that next.

In real life, the political leadership of Japan came to fear the spread of Christianity within the nation. Given that Christianity was introduced by European merchants and spread rapidly throughout the nation, the leadership believed that it was deliberately introduced as a means of providing a backdoor for the European nations to conquer the country. As a result, Christianity was outlawed under penalty of death and European traders were restricted to a single island where they could be monitored.

The arc has Kenshin fighting against a swordsman whose parents were executed for their Christian beliefs. He and his sister only survived because they were handed off to Danish (IIRC) merchants, who spirited them off to Europe before they could be found. The merchants realized that the boy had a great deal of hatred in his heart, and so turned him into a living weapon that they could hopefully unleash against the Japanese government as part of a coup attempt. Even though the ban on Christianity was lifted and the government that put it in place had already been overthrown, he was still deployed to Japan anyway.

I think you can understand now why there was such a backlash.

Yes, maybe. But there is no proof of that, unless you have some. It could just be that the episodes were really bad lol

Yes i do agree with you on dragon ball. It has a much better story line than dbz, and its more well written over all. The fights on dbz were extremely too long (goku vs frieza was over 20 ep). I love bleach as well but i dont like it more than yuyu hakusho. And luckily for me i skipped all the fillers on bleach. I didnt watch any of them. I usually skip filler episodes. Naruto is infamous for their filler episodes as well.

My wife introduced me to Yu Yu Hakusho we haven't had the opportunity to finish it yet. I think we're on EP 30 or something? It looks like an okay Anime so far.

I didn't skip the filler episodes of Bleach when they came out so, I've seen all of the filler at least once. I've also seen the entire Anime past Aizen's defeat. When I introduced my wife to Bleach she got angry with me for skipping all the filler. Then, I accidentally fell asleep and some filler played and when I woke up she was like, "Oh, okay so the filler has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot or really the show." and I said "Told ya" and she calmed down a bit XD.

The only filler that really had a small place in the main plot was the bout arc and the one where the Zanpaktou got a mind of their own and did something... idk I forget, I last watched the Bleach filler like 5 years ago.

Thing is, in Japan it's common for anime to be made while the source material they're adapting is still ongoing. This can lead to a *lot* of issues once the anime catches up to the source material, as the anime team is forced to compensate.

In some instances, we get shows where the anime team creates their own ending. In some cases, it works; for example, Trigun's anime was as well received as the original manga. In other instances, however, it doesn't; for example, the powers-that-be behind the .Hack franchise have reportedly disowned the .Hack//Legend anime because of how bad that turned out.

Then we get shows that decide to do filler until the source catches back up. This is where shows like Kenshin, Bleach, DBZ, and Naruto get their filler from. With Kenshin, this led to the infamous "Renegade Christian" arc that caused the entire show to get cancelled due to the public backlash.

There wasn't really much more to tell in the Rurouni Kenshin Anime anyway. I mean, yeah they could have went on and on and made a whole bunch of more fights and whatnot and covered his Marriage to Karou (Which I believe wasn't covered in the OVA's) but, I think a majority of Kenshin's story was told. Then the OVAs came out that told the entire story and laid Kenshin's life to a close in my opinion. If they ever continue the anime like I said, they should focus on his son and his life and let us see how much the two differed from each other. I'm actually really curious how his life turned out.

Instead of making 3 live action movies based on the OVA's that only did moderately well in Japan. It was interesting to see the OVA's on the big screen but I feel like, Kenshin's era is over and the new era needs to begin if Japan ever decides to touch the series again.

As for .hack I never read the manga so, I never could compare the Anime to the manga. But, I did like a majority of the .hack OVA's and have seen some of the anime.

Speaking of plenty of filler, Detective Conan is getting up there with the most filler episodes ever. It's also starting to become the longest Anime of all time, I mean It's longer than One Piece and the Original Naruto put together and they haven't even remotely caught up to the manga. I mean, I forsee it becoming well over 1,000 episodes, we're on like EP 808 now and not even remotely close to an ending.

I've been watching Detective Conan for a long, long time now. I want closure! XD. I really wish Detective Conan was like Gossick. One really great Anime that can be told in like 26 episodes. Or even 300 episodes... a majority of Detective Conan is just filler. At least the filler is somewhat interesting...

Yes. I think im going to avoid investing too much time on those super long animes right now. At least for the time being. I dont think yuyu hakusho did as well as bleach. But once again my reasons for favoring it goes beyond just the anime itself. My middle school/ higschool life is very similar to that of the protagonist of the show. I grew up in a rough neighborhood pike yuske. I witness alot of gang fights growing up, and i was around alot of rough necks like most of the characters of yuyu hakusho. So for me this anime is like a home away from home. Which is alot more than i could say about bleach. But dont get me wrong ichigo has some of the coolest fight scenes ever. Especially when he goes up agiasnt the arracncars and the espada

Yeah there really is so much Anime and so little time to fill it into ones life. Especially a religious life.

I try to cram in as much as I can into a 2-3 hour period. That's all I really have of free time these days.

Yes same here. I get about 2 days off from my job. With schooling im pretty much busy everyday. However im lucky enough to be off this semester until summer which begins in may. So for the time being im going to catch up on a few anime. Im also going to invest into a PlayStation which will make my time that much more enjoyable

There wasn't really much more to tell in the Rurouni Kenshin Anime anyway.

The anime was always going to adapt the final story arc - the reappearance of Kenshin's brother-in-law and the full explanation of his past - leading up to his eventual marriage. They would have appeared as regular episodes, but when the anime was cancelled this couldn't happen. Instead, his background was given via the Trust and Betrayal OVAs, while a new anime-only ending was devised for the final release.

As for .hack I never read the manga so, I never could compare the Anime to the manga. But, I did like a majority of the .hack OVA's and have seen some of the anime.

.Hack was always conceived as a multi-media franchise.

The original .Hack//Sign anime was meant to be taken together with the .Hack video game series, animated material that was exclusive to the games, the soundtracks, and some supplementary written work as well as the historical timeline given in the DVDs. For example, it's the supplementary novels (et al) that explain why Orca and Balmung are such big deals in the game; the anime and the video games simply take that for granted.

When Sign proved to be such a huge hit, the .Hack franchise was extended further. More novels and manga were released in the lead-up to what became .Hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet. As part of it, the decision was made to do a new anime series. Rather than try what had been done before (having everything dove-tail together), the anime production team decided to simply adapt the ongoing Legend manga. Problem is, however, between the reduced episode count (13 episodes, wasn't it?) and the fact that the manga was still in process, a true adaptation couldn't happen. Instead, the first 3.5 episodes of the show follow the manga before everything branches off wildly.

Then of course we have .Hack//Roots, which is supposed to be set some time into the distant future.

I'm just going to be as straight forward as i can! I'm interested in making friends that like to watch anime in there spare time but love Jesus dearly :) . If you're interested in talking to me personally add me as a friend via some "instant messenger" or preferably Skype. (PM me your "instant messenger" or Skype name so you don't have to post it publicly :)) Also, hello everyone! :D I've recently been watching Yoru no Yatterman and re-watching Yu Yu Hakusho with a friend since he has never seen it.

Hi Mallory-san,

I guess we're reviving the thread(?) because I love much of Japan, including anime and manga as well as being Christian. I go to conventions when I have time and they are near. What are some of your favorite anime?

My favorites are Ef: Tale of Melodies, Steins;Gate, and Spice and Wolf.

Hi, it seems this thread is trying to come back! Which is good because I am trying to meet people who are christian and love anime. Its hard to find new people that are willing to talk about both these topics. Feel free to message me and I will do my best to reply!

The weirdest thing. I was watching Attack of Titan and they had the episode where they found out the things were actually hollow, and that Sunday, the priest talks about how "sometimes our problems seem big, but inside they're empty."

I'm a big believer that when God wants to teach us something, anything will do.

I'm into very cute anime (Kanon is an example) but sometimes I like high fantasy.

This one is very good. Slice of life/light horror.

Btw, you do mean fans of anime who are Christian, right? Not fans of Christian anime? Because there are only a few of those that aren't outright vampire anime (which usually suck), aside from Saint Young Men and My Last Day.

Could swear Kenshin had a few more arcs after the Shimabara related one and I've only watched it through once. That was the peak, everything afterwards was more lazy as I recall, though there were cool concepts, including a whole Feng Shui thing and another ninja group besides the Oniwaban

Not even sure Saint Young Men, in spite of not really insulting Christianity and being fairly accurate, is really Christian, it's sort of sitcom with Jesus and Buddha, not exactly friendly to a particular idea about Jesus a subset of Christians would hold to, though Jesus has come up in other series with very different ideas (like, I'm not joking, he was alluded to being a powerful esper, explaining his miracles and such)

Not sure if this forum is still alive but I've been DYING to meet other Christian anime fans. It's refreshing to my soul to see that they exist. If anyone ever sees this response please reach out no matter how much later it might be. I'm realizing more and more how much I need Christian community in this area of my life.

I think the issue you may find is what kinds of Christians you want to associate with, because I have Christian friends of various stripes that I'm pretty sure are also anime fans, but may clash with you in terms of doctrine or such. Or they may not, yet also not see an issue with enjoying anime you don't enjoy personally.

Like with any appreciation of art, there should be that understanding from the start that even people with the same religious values can still differ in their approach to works of fiction. I think C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien are a good example of contrast, since supposedly Tolkien felt the idea of the Christian metaphors Lewis used in Narnia was too blunt and he did more basic fantasy by contrast in his work with LOTR.

And with anime in particular, the presence of Christianity is often utilized more for imagery than for the religion itself in a direct sense. I'm only able to think of a few that are explicitly in that vein, like Vatican Miracle Examiner and maybe One Pound Gospel (which has an anime of sorts in an OVA that's about an hour long I haven't seen, not that I've read the manga either), while many, like Chrono Crusade or Qwaser of Stigmata, tend to take a very loose notion even when Christianity is a direct subject in the story.

I saw the Christian values/beliefs in both stories, whether or not Tolkien intended it or not (he said there is no Christian allegory in his story and he in fact hated that C.S. Lewis did) I still saw for what was intended in a divine nature. The more I have read about their disputes with one another (C.S. Lewis seemed more cool-headed than Tolkien by language), the more it seems to me that Tolkien took much more time with his story than Lewis did.

In the end both had tons of attention and I honestly love both stories (Narnia movies more than the actual books).

I forget about the Narnia movies in terms of the recent ones, since I think they stopped at Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but I do remember British ones that adapted, I believe, most of the stories, even ones I don't recall reading as a child, even if I own all 7 books. The Silver Chair was seemingly the last one in the BBC series, sad that they never got to Magician's Nephew, Horse and His Boy or The Last Battle
