The Church is not opposed to vaccines usually. As far as evolution, wiki gives a good overview with references. In particular, see the encyclical Humani Generis for specific off-limits teachings such as polygenism and the evolution of the soul.

Ok, cool. I just remember all the headlines from a couple of years ago about the Pope saying that evolution was real.

From the Catholic Bioethics Center:

http://www.ncbcenter.org/page.aspx?pid=1284

Reubella, chickenpox, and hepatitis A vaccines are all derived from aborted fetal tissues. The children in question were aborted in the 1960s. New abortions are not required for the creation of new doses of these vaccines. However, these vaccines would not exist at all if they had not been cultured in fetal cells. So it was a grave evil that lead to these vaccines being created, but it is "only" remote material cooperation in that grave evil to use them since there is no alternative at this time.

Popes can have opinions that aren't in any way binding on Catholics. Pope Benedict didn't like Rock & Roll, for example. Pope Francis is quite famous for making off the cuff remarks that get him in trouble for their seeming vagueness or ability to be misinterpreted. But when he issues bulls, encyclicals, or apostolic exhortations, that's when he is exercising his teaching authority.

Ok. Got it. Well the point I was making was that there are certainly Catholics who have zero problem accepting God, evolution & vaccines & are pretty pro-science. The Pope might not speak for all Catholics but he is Catholic.

You are correct. A Catholic can believe in evolution in good conscious. Or not believe in it. With vaccines, they need to consider the common good as well as the moral problems associated with certain vaccines, when making their decision.

In Bloomington?? My grandpa went there! He's from Indiana.
Yes! We have branches of the university here and there as well. :) Hopefully they nip this in the bud.

That's a really great school. I might apply there. I like the campus a lot. He got his degree in business & he's been really successful. He wears his class ring. Lots of Hoosier pride. :) Well I hope it gets nipped in the bud fast too!

you also have to take into account the health risks that may come with a vaccine
(while slight in most cases, it is something to weigh into the calculation)

The health risks of not being vaccinated are a thousand times greater.
