Hey all, well I seem to have found myself in quite the pickle. I want to make sure a certain family member knows Christ, but I can't find the right words to start a meaningful conversation that doesn't end in jovial awkwardness or me walking away wanting to kick myself in the mouth...here are the deets.
I am a painfully shy little bugger and have a major stuttering problem. This makes talking hard sometimes, and it is magnified tenfold when I'm nervous. So imagine how I sound when I try to talk things Jesus...
I need ideas on what to say to start a good conversation about surety of salvation... questions I can ask to assess the person's knowledge of what it means to be saved. Does that make any sense? The person says they believe in God, but I want to be sure, ya know? What can I ask them to be sure?
Any and ALL tips, ideas, advice, wisdom is GREATLY appreciated.
Blessings in Jesus name. <3
I recommend the book "Questioning Evangelism." You ask questions to find out what they believe. And you ask questions and pray they will see the root issues. At some point you can be direct in answering questions, but it's not necessary from the beginning. People love talking about themselves and their opinions, and it's hard to understand how to talk to someone without learning more about how they think. It helps you to pray for them more specifically, too.
God created a perfect world (Genesis 1).
Man sinned against God (Genesis 3).
Sin brought death (physical and spiritual) to all men (Romans 5:12), and a curse over the entire creation (Romans 8:19-22).
Sin separates man from a holy (perfectly pure) God.
A blood sacrifice is necessary to cover sin, because the life of a creature is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11, Hebrews 9:22). The first blood sacrifice was when God killed animals to make clothes of skin to cover Adam and Eve's nakedness/shame (Genesis 3:21).
God promised a Savior (first time: Seed of the woman, Genesis 3:15) who would overcome the curse Satan instigated. The Seed was prophesied to descend from Abraham (Genesis 22:18) and David (1 Chronicles 17:11-14) and be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14)... (many other prophecies, too)
Jesus is he Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7, John 1:29, Exodus 12). When the Father sees us hiding behind His blood, He passes over us and does not see our sins or destroy us for them.
Jesus was born of a virgin (Luke 1-2).
Jesus was fully man and fully God, and was tempted but was without sin (Matthew 4). Because He was holy, and we as sons and daughters of Adam are not, He alone could be a substitute for us.
Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of sins (ours), was buried, and He rose again on the third day. (The ultimate and final blood sacrifice.)
Salvation involves repentence (Matthew 9:13) from sins and belief (or faith) in Jesus' sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins (Romans 10:9-10).
Paul lays out in the basics of the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15.
Jesus will come again and take away the curse. Those who died in Christ will be raised from the dead to live in Christ forevermore (spiritual and physical bodies). After the end of this world, people will be with the Lord in Heaven or separated from Him forever in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20).
Sorry if that was long winded, but the most important thing is to pray for your unbelieving family members and friends that the Holy Spirit would help them understand and embrace the gospel.
As far as gauging understanding, they have to understand that they are a sinner and that there's no way for them to earn salvation by good deeds (Romans 3). They have to believe in Jesus' divinity, sinlessness, death, burial and resurrection, and that trusting in Jesus alone is the only way to receive forgiveness for sins. You can't judge a person's heart, but the book of 1 John helps people test their own hearts to see if they are in the faith. There will be many who claim to be Christians but aren't. Christians are known by their fruit - their obedience to Jesus and reflection of Him.
