Yes, absolutely. You can buy tool steel in many shapes and sizes. You can buy steel that is already heat treated. You remove metal with a saw, grinder, and file. They call this the "stock removal" method of knife and tool making. You can make good knives this way too.
OK So how long do you suppose it may take to make, say 3 carving knives already heat treated; with wood handle, nothing fancy just good quality?

You may find these videos helpful. I found these on YouTube awhile back. This man is a blade smith, he demonstrates different ways to make wood chisels. He also demonstrates how to use different steels. The 1095 carbon steel he uses is what i would likely find in scrap metal, or something like it.

I have never made them so i cant say. It depends on the chisel grind i suppose. A simple flat chisel might be a lot quicker than a gouge or v chisel. After making the chisel, you would then need to make a handle. That part could be a pretty fast job i think, but im not sure.

Ok Now for wood lol ... what are you desiring to make out of wood? Small figures or what?

Anything my heart desires. :) Right now im thinking about making a rustic woodworking bench. Something low to the ground that i can use to spit wood, and maybe do some joinery as well.. I love the idea of taking a slab of lumber, or even a log, and using beautiful joinery techniques to attach the legs. I also want to try carving wood spoons and bowls. I'm also thinking of trying chair making. I have watched so many chair videos that i can almost build one in my sleep.

OK... let me know if you wake up to a chair lol :) So when do you suppose you will start on a project?
Learning joinery techniques can be rather interesting..Didn't know much was made like that any more..
Oh, I saw 1st video and skipped through 2 and 3, will see the others later very informative videos..
Each wood he used were beautiful!

Lol, that would be cool.

I have had many things going on between wood and metal working. I will be working on something soon. They still use traditional joinery for furniture, but its not used as much. Traditional joinery is the best way to built things however. Traditional woodworking is usually stronger and more beautiful as well. In the modern world its about cheap art and profits, but in the old world it was about craftsmanship and strength.

This guy forges a piece of steel cable. Its made from many strands of high strength wire. He will forge weld the cable into one piece by heating and hammering it. He then forges a knife blade out of the steel. This is similar to laminated steel. This knife could be acid etched and the layers could be seen better. You can still see the pattern in the blade without acid etching however.

You can shape metal in some ways without needing to heat it, but it requires metal bending tools which help bend, twist and scroll metal. Here is a simple ring roller a guy made to bend rings and hoops. I plan on making one of these but perhaps a bit more heavy duty. I like the simplicity of his roller though.

When do you suppose you will start on your project (s)? Do you work outside any with the wood I'm speaking of /
I'd like to see a few pictures. I started to chemically strip down a full size heavy redwood (?) bed frame that was badly spray painted black; but the weather put that to a quick end. That is a project I have aside for when I have to do something on a nice evening outside... lol

I will be doing some woodwork outside. I relined my forge about a week ago, so now i can forge something. My indoor work area is a complete mess, and its very small. I need to find more space to store things. I'M trying to figure out how i can make usable space again. Once i begin making projects again i will have much to do.

I understand all too well about small spaces, I also understand big places get so crowded too lol I always had that situation. And I don't usually enjoy clean up after leaving the mess for too long. I usually clean up before a project and try real hard to tidy up but for some crazy reason with crafts it doesn't really happen. May-be little outdoor storage tool box. They aren't too costly and can hold even garden stuff . Then again one may keep buying those storage boxes lol... I think I was cleaning more then designing ! I had a 2 and 1/2 car garage at one point and it was a chore to keep it in order...LORD knows I made much effort ...those days are gone..so I just grin and bear lack of space..maybe Turn up some encouraging Jeremy Camp songs and build up some shelving along any free wall lol . I hung those peg boards along 1/2 my garage walls and bought those hanger inserts from a Biglots closing sale and I was set until I had to share.. Cleanup, actually it can be rewarding once it is done, it's starting that is the hardest I think... Just think of the projects and pray for angels to come help ...I use to pretend angels were helping, things went fast then...Whatever works I say lol. Maybe make a stand with hooks for tools ..I made a box with no sides just 2x4 planks 4 feet tall 3 feet wide 2 feet deep and stored garden tools. It had a floor but no walls just a frame and put hooks on the outside for smaller tools..it was worked well. Saved me room..Im thinking something like that may work or even a T shape being your tools are smaller..with hooks or even large nails ...hum I wonder if you can make tools with a circle on the end so you can hang them...Thinking again lol
