I was wondering what versions of the Bible people used, and am particularly interested in views of the New King James Version.

I've used the NIV ever since being given one at my baptism in 1983. Before then it was the New English Bible and back in school days the RSV. As my current (NIV Study) Bible is falling apart I was thinking about buying a new one, and wondered about getting the NKJV instead. I like the NIV, but thought it might be interesting to have a change. (I bought the Amplified Bible a little while ago, after a discussion on here, but unfortunately have mislaid it presumably in a recent house move.)

What about you? Do you have a preferred version? I'm not saying that any genuine translation is better than another, but just wondered if people kept to the same versions, used several or changed them over the years. :)

I am not 'into' casteing

I do find, that the NIV 'speaks' more-assuredly, to 'me'
and, appeals much more to me, than other-versions

When the 'Spirit' of 'The Word' speaks
what does it matter how it was written and by whom ?

Yes, I cannot say which is BETTER written
But I do stick-with what I know and understand

Thanks for your reply Dave.:)

Yes, I like the NIV and certainly will continue to use it. I just thought that if I bought another version it might be interesting to see slightly different nuances, and I am curious about the NKJV. However I'm not saying that any version is better. It's all the Word of God! (Except for those used by sects which have altered the Word.)

I use the World English Bible or the American Standard Bible when I need to post Bible verses online as these are in the public domain. There are no copyright infringement issues with these Bibles.

My choice of the NIV, is one of plain language and my ability to assimilate meaning, from the text
regardless of WHAT VERSION others read....
COPYRIGHT issues, apply, only to reproduction (in whole or in part) and, WHO claims to hold it

For study, I use KJV...
For devotions,NKJV (easier reading)
For hard core topical, I use a variety of versions in order to get a broad view.

But KJV with Strong's Concordance, and Young's Literal Translation is pretty hard to beat.

Might I recommend E-Sword ( http://www.e-sword.net/ )? It is a free Bible study software with an excellent compendium of electronic Bibles, Concordances, Dictionaries, and etcetera, with quite a large assortment of Bibles available for the software - among them being the NKJV - most of which are free. That way you could kick the tires without the investment into a $30 volume... You'd probably find you can't live without it (e-Sword) anyway. :)

Thank you for your replies and suggestions dqhall and roamer_1. :) I haven't come across the ones you mentioned except the KJV which I remember my mother having. I think it is beautiful prose, but for daily reading I like newer versions.

Thank you very much for the suggestion of E-Sword roamer_1. I'll check it out!

Sorry I was not on the forum for a few days, rebornfree. I like both the reading in the NIV and NKJV in today's English; both versions seem a lot alike. I like that the NKJV is mostly similar to the KJV, except without the older English language words. The KJV is nice and poetic with the older words also, especially the Psalms.

Thank you for your reply faithinlife. I have not been here for a few days either, hence my delay in replying. I appreciate you letting me know that the NIV and NKJV are alike, but also mentioning the similarity of the NKJV to the KJV. I love the poetry of the latter, but trip up over the "thee"s and "thou"s, so maybe the NKJV is for me, although I still love the NIV.
