Hello fellow Christians:

I have a beautiful crystal collection that I used to be obsessed with when I was younger. Recently, I stumbled upon these once again. It reminded me of my childhood, and these specimens are very fit to display. I have been using them at my little prayer alter with my statue of Christ and picture of the Divine Mercy. I use them symbolically for prayer intentions. I would arrange them, light a candle, and pray to God for those intentions. For example: Today, I arranged a sequence of rose quartz for love and peace, amethyst for calmness, and clear quartz for clear and pure thoughts, all of which I use symbolically. I then lit my candle and prayed for these intentions for the day ahead.

Recently in my random searching, I have stumbled upon crystal healing. Some use crystal healing as a way to dispel negative energy. "Crystal healers" use these crystals believing that they have a specific energy contained in them when they were formed specifically for peace, love, comfort, energy, etc. I am fully aware that superstition and "crystal healing" is a sin. It worries me that what I do is similar, but I don't use or summon the occult for this. I use the crystals symbolically to remind me of my intentions, and I pray to God for the healing powers instead of relying on a "secret power" from the crystal. I use the crystals to give them some light because they are very beautiful and to thank God for his creation.

Using crystals symbolically for prayer: Is this practice ok?
I do feel as if it is on the ok side because I am using these crystals symbolically to remind me of these intentions and praying to God for the intentions on my little religious altar. Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you all.

I used to be into the new age but God led me out of it.
I had crystals but now just use them as decoration. They actually dont have much healing power, although theres quartz crystals in watches.

Please dont be deceived. Jesus didnt use crystals in his healing ministry. Any rock he prayed on would have been on a mountain. Place your trust in Him rather than creation. Also you dont know if the crystals you are using have been prayed over by occultists. Occultists will use objects like crystals for divination purposes, which God has forbidden in the bible, its witchcraft and sorcery. You are praying to a different god if you do that.

The bible is strictly against treating objects as idols and obsessions and also it is on the verge of occultism which is of satan. If you continue, you will open the door for unclean dark spirits to enter your life , then youll find yourself getting deeper and more focused on the created instead of the creator who is only to be praised and worshipped .

You seem to be using the crystals as icons, that is, as an aid to meditation and prayer. This is symbolic as you just said. Remember that crystals, as beautiful as they are, have no magical qualities. To regard them as anything more than that verges on idolatry.

If you have any qualms about a particular practice, don't do it. Sometimes we are looking for the boundaries of right and wrong, good and bad, so that we might play along them. We want to get as close to sin as possible without actually crossing into it. But if your focus is on Christ, if loving and following him is the fundamental aim of your life, which it should be if you are a disciple of Christ, then you're going to be occupied with getting close to him rather than close to sin. Your interest won't be in finding the outer limits of right and wrong, but in devoting more and more of yourself to being like your Saviour. As you do so, it becomes very clear what you ought and ought not to do.

Selah.

*I see having an altar is scriptural;however,
what is to be offered there are prayers, worship
of God, offering one's self.

Using crystals symbolically for prayer?
quoting you:
"I arranged a sequence of rose quartz for love and peace, amethyst for calmness, and clear quartz for clear and pure thoughts, all of which I use symbolically."
*Is this from New Age or some other spiritual practice?
This is very close to what I've seen/heard and
practiced long ago when I was a young believer...
I would put out crystals and say prayers(directed
to God) but the crystals would be in front of me.
My mom's side of the family mixed Christianity
with occult practices-- we also had good luck charms etc...until we got set free from
that when I was a teen.

I would say avoid using crystals etc in that manner.
If you have crystals don't use them in worship/and
or prayer
as you have been doing.

You can display your crystals as you would a piece of art...however, if you are questioning having those crystals (or whatever)- then get rid of them.

Helping you to pray...
You can use scripture(Bible) during such times...you
can pray for peace, calmness and love...those words
are found in the Bible/scripture verses.
Nothing wrong with learning verses to say during prayer
or at other times.

Using crystals, beads etc...even symbolically
Isn't something Jesus did or taught
his disciples to do...read chapter 6 of Matthew...
beginning at verse 5-15.
It's an outline on what to include in prayer.

Jesus rose early to pray...
Mark 1:35 “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a solitary place, and there he prayed.”

Pray about it...
Philippians 4:6-7
>>do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Here's what I think: I don't think that it is wrong to do that because there are plenty of Christians who do rituals during prayer. However, I do think that you should know in your heart that Jesus & God are #1 and those rituals with the crystals are not more beneficial. Be careful not to replace God with an object. I wouldn't get too involved in the crystal healing thing, I would stay more involved in Jesus & God healing.

For some a visual and/or holdable symbol acts in much the same way as a structured written liturgy. My eye sight is not all it could be and I do not find voice activated software to be the best way to structure prayer. I have a collection of handmade glass beads with different surfaces and textures that I use to remind me of people, issues and similar that I should be praying for. I also have a bowl with a mixed collection of rocks, natural crystal and pieces of wood that I use in a similar way. Using something God has created as a symbol or icon pointing towards the Creator to enable prayer is fine.
It is only if you get caught in the symbol as the be all and end all or if you try and focus energy to make your will happen you have crossed the line from an object being a helpful icon to a worthless idol.

However, she has stated that she uses them at her 'prayer alter' and that she 'uses them symbolically for prayer intentions'.

I do not agree with her doing this as she has described. God is a jealous God. The Israelite's issue with the golden calf shows how little patience God has for any trinket as a symbol. The generation of Israelite's that worshipped that golden calf NEVER saw the promised land. God cursed that generation and EVERY ONE OF THEM died before God would let their children into the promised land. That is why they and Moses were in the desert for 40 years. To give that cursed generation time to die.

Serious stuff.

Sorry but I find that a strange way to pray. I know that some people find icons helpful but well, in the bible its never mentioned you MUST have one to pray. So it would be an extra thing.

Try praying without all your paraphenalia around you, this would be good for your prayer life as we are meant to pray unceasingly, and in all types of situations, everywhere. What you have in your prayer closet is up to you, but in mine my focus is on God so I just have scripture on the walls to remind me. I dont even have a cross. I used to have this salt lamp that was made of himalayan crystal that had a cross etched into it, but the lamp melted lol.

Now I have this plastic globe that lights up with the stars. I suppose I COULD use it prayerfully But it doesnt have any power in of itself. Other objects mentioned in the bible for prayer are prayer shawls or tallit. Jewish people used them to remind themselves to be in prayer. Also women pray woth their heads covered. They also had tefillim which was little scriptures bound to their forehead and arms.
Jesus often went to pray on the mountain top. I think you do sense you are closer to God that way, when you get to higher ground.

I think you need to be very careful about making sure you are worshiping and praying with the Creator and not the created. If it ever comes to point where you start thinking there actually is something to the crystal healing thing, or if you ever find yourself unable to pray if you don't have access to them, then you have crossed over that line.

Someone mentioned icons. I myself have grown up in a faith tradition that does not use icons, and is in fact very much against them. But as I understand it, the catholic and orthodox folks do - however, even then, I think those tend to be religious art pieces created by man to represent specific religious figures: Mary, angels, saints, etc. Again, my protestant belief system does not place such non-Jesus religious figures on any higher spiritual level than my own believer priesthood. Catholic or Orthodox folks may have better information for you on that aspect.

Why should what is right and wrong to God be based off what many people do?

Just because some do it doesn't mean it's Godly. A lot of people do what they see everyone else doing and that is why people go any way the wind blows.

I think you are walking a fine line between something harmless and something spiritually dangerous. You are right on that line. One small move and you can easily be on the wrong side of that line. I myself would not do what you are doing. I wouldn't want to take the gamble. :prayer:

But if that is what he chooses to do then who are we to decide whether it is godly or not. If we don't agree or if we think that an act is ungodly then we should gently lead that person to the Lord instead of judging them.
