"Underrated" can mean a heck of a lot of different things, but David Bowie himself is the polar opposite of "underrated", he's one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful musicians of all time.

You can convincingly say that parts of his massive discography are underrated compared to the huge successes of 'Ziggy Stardust' or 'Let's Dance'; for example, 1995's 'Outside' wasn't a big hit with fans or critics and the general public probably hasn't even heard of it, but some people consider it a great album. Bowie certainly isn't underrated as a whole, though.

I think the British band Sweet would very well fit the legends that were underrated.

Underrated perhaps, but what makes them legends? They had a decent amount of chart success, so they're not completely obscure, but I wouldn't say they're that well known. Most people would be hard-pressed to name too many of their songs, and that's if they've even heard of them in the first place. I think in order to be regarded as legends they may have needed to have had a far greater and longer lasting impact they they did.

Eh, I wouldn't object if someone called them "legends", and certainly not as far as the genre of glam rock is known. They're no Bowie or T. Rex, but it's impossible not to mention them when talking about glam, and I think that says something. A legend in their own genre, at least.

That's true. I suppose, they could be regarded as "glam legends" but underrated when looking at rock music as a whole. But the claim appeared to be that they were both legends and underrated in the same context, and I'm really not seeing how that could work.

It's possible to be both, maybe not for Sweet, but for other bands, especially within more niche genres. There are dozens of bands who may have pioneered their genres, are astoundingly prolific and hugely acclaimed by their scenes and critics yet have experienced no major commercial success or media recognition. Underrated legends, so to speak.

This may tie in to the David Bowie thread. First and foremost, his music is awesome. May he rest in peace. By the way, can a legend be considered underrated? If this is the case, would you consider David Bowie on of them?
Never underrated, a rock icon whose music was in a class by itself....perfection and excellence.

I love their song Love Is Like Oxygen!

Thanks. I need to listen to more of their music. Whenever I say underrated, I mean that there are legendary artists and bands that more listen need to hear about or listen to their music. I think Sweet is one of those bands. Having said that, David Bowie seemed to have been a pretty cool guy who was very unique. Everyone (I think) knows about Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson (RIP), David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley, Elvis Presley (RIP), and the Rolling Stones, but not everyone here in this last generation or two (at least in the US) has ever heard of Sweet. From what I have listened to, I am surprised that more than enough people under 35 has ever talked about much less heard of them.
