What do I have in my family emergency kit:

It pays to watch a variety of videos on prepping in terms of the emergency kit I watched more than one YouTube video on bug out bags or grab n go bags that is your emergency kit put in a duffel bags back packs I had my hiking backpack as a bug out bag at one stage they're basically any bag you can pick up easily with your emergency items and run /leave the house for evacuation. You'll learn different tips from one prepping YouTube video to another so don't just watch one prepping video and think you're sorted. One of the bug out bag videos suggested a white bag so it's easily visible to grab and run if it's dark or power outage.

My Emergency kit plus bug out bag contains.

Communication

very important to get Two way radios because you won't be able to use telephones, cellphones as cell towers will be not working. It's great for communication between family and warning others of approaching natural disasters ie you could warn someone of a tsunami in the distance or even to your home in a 2 storey house if the stair case had collapsed you may be able to communicate with them. They're really useful and peace of mind.

I also have a solar car battery charger I need to get a better one they are needed with your car battery power inverter so you don't drain your battery, ruin it

Water purification tablets
For water you have stored

Lighting
Dynamo torch a torch that doesn't need batteries it winds up and produces torch light

You can also get solar powered torches and solar radios those are - Very important for updates from your government local region and news of martial law

Laminated local emergency radio station frequencies
Portable hand held radios
More than one smartphone that has radio plus a small torch light app that works offline

Those lifestraws look a bit dubious, do they really work? It looks like the little girl is drinking urine?!

Which you can do in an emergency I heard, if you run out of everything. I cant imagine it tastes any good.
I have a big berkey that I used to drink out of a drainage retention ditch and it was pure, wonderful tasting water.

I have only used it to survive in 3 dire weather related emergencies, in the 16 years I have prepped. But I use my prep gear every summer as the thunderstorms start rolling in. I lose power at least 2 or 3 times a year for a couple hours. I live way out in the country, and lots of trees around. I've used it job sites for first aid (I keep my bag in the truck), and every 6 months I live in my tent to sell fireworks. So I literally live off my gear for about a month every New Years and 4th of July. I sell flowers on the road side also for easter and mother's day, and the gear comes in handy then also.

hmm I just live in the suburbs in the valley in auckland and never really had those kinds of extreme weathers that you get elsewhere in the country.

emergencies for us would be medical emergencies but theres always people around and local hospitals.
Or maybe the odd power cut or as a friend of mine had the other day, no water due to a leak and had to get a plumber in.

however I think the bigger risk would be volcanic activity if any of the volcanoes decided to break dormancy and erupt on us.

I'm a Nzer too I've lived in Christchurch during the quakes plus Auckland were back in Aucks but it's a good idea for anyone to have a kit including Auckland remember those tornadoes on the north shore that was a surprise so it shows be prepared. When the first EQ struck in Christchurch in 2010 at 4am it was not only a surprise at firsthand experience of an Earthquake but the aftermath we were all unprepared for. So be ready.

True. What do you store all your stuff in, like, do you have a dedicated bag or box for it or is it all in a cupboard somewhere? I think it would have to be light enough to fit in the boot of your car and for one person to be able to lift easily. You could split it into two kits.

How unprepared were the people in chch when the earthquake struck. I mean what would be the most important item? I'm thinking maybe buckets and tubs for water and sewage.

I do have a hard time believing police are afraid of a violent man, they arrest those sorts all the time.

There is "reckless violent" police are prone to handle professionally, with professionally encouraged techniques & there is a "whole different level" which is trained in the counter moves to police techniques and if you come at them as you are trained to. . . they will put you in the dirt, rape and kill you or whatever they want because for every move there is a counter-move and folks trained in the counter moves. . . are just stupid not to be treated lightly or like anyone else. You fear them (from a LEO perspective) because {oftentimes} huge amounts of their time and training have gone into "not being captured" or "disrupting the enemy from an inferior strategic position" . . we call it asymmetrical warfare these days. . . there are classes, clinics, and . . a big chunk of modern soldier school devoted to exactly, exactly. . . . the skills that would make Joe Cop smart to be "afraid" of old man (done war, been trained, has experience, etc)

Gosh thats a lot to fit in your car. I need my boot space for groceries.
I only have a first aid kit, blankets and spare backpack with clothes and shoes in mine. Also baskets and a bucket. Plus water bottle.

I think I will add a torch.

... there hasn't been any warning of any natural disasters that need to prepare for.

Disasters rarely send advance warning.

I've worked professionally in the area of disaster preparedness for nearly two decades. I've never seen a natural disaster that didn't take people by surprise - at least to some extent. Good grief, the residents of New Orleans built their city below sea level, didn't properly maintain the levees and were still surprised when hurricane Katrina flooded the city.

We have what I would call 72 Hour bags for each member of our household and what I would call Get Home Bags in each vehicle. Each vehicle also has a First Aid/Trauma kit (I was in a medical unit in the Army) and, of course, we have First Aid/Trauma supplies in the house.
