Windows 10 is a better road to take because it provides more features, more security, and is just an overall advancements than the other Windows operating systems.
More features? Sure! Better Security? LOL no. Windows Defender is a terrible antivirus. I see no reason to use Windows 10, as Microsoft decided to ingeniously record everything I type.
Actually, Microsoft doesn't do very much with your data. Google and Facebook do because that is how they make their money. Microsoft doesn't make their money that way. So I must ask: what credible source can you provide that I haven't seen that outright proves Microsoft is harvestly data about people that you believe will harm a person?

I don't care what Microsoft does with my data. If they have my data, that's a big no-no in my eyes. They have no reason to record me and spy on me.

The only thing I run on Windows 10 is Windows Defender. Never would have done that on XP.

As for typing and recording, don't use google Chrome, Gmail, google docs, anything Google. That is all they do. However, they do it to help link people to advertisers that make sense.

You're view of Microsoft spying on you sounds like you've soaked up the headline grabbing news outlets that don't care about truth, but clicks. It's absolutely unfounded. You have clearly decided not to read the other side of the coin.

I don't deny I drink the MS koolaid, but I'm also reasonable. I'm first to say I'm not a fan of google's prying eyes, but I also recognize they have the individuals interest at heart too because it's an economy issue. If they break trust with the data, people will leave google products and there goes the profits.

You can see the benefit you get from them seeing parts of your data. iPhone doesn't do a very good job yet at customizing the experience to you. But Google and Microsoft do. And it shows.

Windows Defender does have a problem with false positives, but most of the non-passive anti-malware suites have that problem at some point. It flagging binaries I built myself and know are clean is what stopped me from using it, but I also always use Spybot's Immunizations and regularly scrub things down with CCleaner. It still went for a good 3-4 months before it started doing that, though.

Not that this actually has anything to do with inherent security. Windows Security =/= Windows Defender. The things that end users never see - upgrades to the API and kernel that come with every new release and lower-level bugfixes - are where the bulk of OS-based security comes from. The same is true of any OS, not just Windows. The other measures of solving security problems are more variable (PEBKAC is always an issue) or are standard measures that have to do with how things are actually executed (the permissions/ACL/UAC system, which has always been part of the NT line, but that most users only began to be required to take part in by default from Vista onward).

Windows Defender is terrible. It constantly flags everything I download.

Downloading LDraw? Windows thinks it's a virus. Installing Foldit? Windows thinks it's a virus. Downloading binary files? You guessed it, Windows thinks it's a virus.

And I don't like my data being recorded for ads. I wouldn't mind if I could disable it, but I can't disable Microsoft's tracking. You have to go into the registry and delete the files relating to telemetry.

You can see why I prefer Linux. :p

I assume you don't use Facebook and Google products either?

Have Win 8.1, have yet to hear a compelling reason. Anyone?

I've been using windows 10 since it came out in July. I also have Windows 7 on a backup partition on another hard drive. I didn't like Windows 10 at first. I thought it was complicated and way too user friendly. But, over the months I've grown to like it and I haven't touched my Windows 7 partition in many, many months.

But, there are many reasons to go with Windows 10 that have already been stated. Besides, It's a Free OS currently. Worst case scenario is, you don't like it and remove it from your system and go back to 8.1.

As I stated in another thread,I upgraded on my desktop to see if it was worth the trouble...
Troubles?BIG TIME!!!The desktop kept freezing up or parts of the screen would go black.Could not play any graphics intensive games at all.It would freeze during utility scans..the list goes on.
Went back to 7 ultimate really quickly..not going back.

If one was to upgrade to Windows 10 from a previous version of the OS. Wouldn't a fresh install, from disc or USB stick yield better results?

My latest laptop came with version 10. I never had any performance issues with it, didn't ever crash or anything.

Yes and no. On principle, a fresh install is generally better where possible, but upgrades work most of the time. Sometimes it doesn't make any difference (e.g. I have a HP with a 2nd Gen i5 and an AMD graphics chip and Windows 10 has problems with a particular version of the graphics driver - and this occurs on most variants of that HP model regardless of install method).

My latest laptop came with version 10. I never had any performance issues with it, didn't ever crash or anything.

With that in mind, you'd rather hope most companies would get their factory image right (not that they always do). :p I actually had a broken wireless driver out of the box with my Dell laptop (usually I just reinstall anyway, but it was a new toy and I didn't want to wait).
