No. Unless you live in East Africa, the Sudan, the Levant, Central Asia or Yemen.

Or San Bernardino.

These are the places we'll be fighting.

I already got my participation awards, time for someone else.

Fighting in the Levant with FaceBook and Twitter... still doesn't sound like much of a war.

One could hope. One would be incorrect. 18-25 year olds, even trained ones, behave like 18-25 year olds.
I would never set the bar so low for adults. I've noticed that the people who do so tend to be the ones who have no interest in actually acting their age, so they lower the standards for everyone else rather than improving themselves. Like the ones who tell themselves that everyone was breaking the law and doing "stupid stuff" in high school, so they were just being normal teenagers...

You should go to the Selective Service website and check to see if you have a number

I wasn't required to do so and so I don't have/never had a number...

In fact I don't ever remember being asked for it either...

Me too and that is the usual training all Soldiers get is professionalism

So do you think it would be a good idea for everyone over the age of 18 be required to have at least 2 years mandatory military service?? I do...

Just out of curiosity, what interaction do you have with the younger generation? I teach at the college and grad school level so I have close interaction with these folks and I do not see what you are describing. Are they different from my generation? Of course. But my generation was much different from the WWII generation. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Yes, I do. My kids are that age - college/grad school. We have the the kids along with their entourages...lol! I'm also up at the local college myself - not as a student though. I realize I forget the 'ie' I guess. Meaning - its does not apply to each and every individual within that generation.

I'm not the WWII generation either.

I wasn't aware that we stopped respecting the military. I would say that our views on military service have changed in that people my age no longer see it as a some sort of duty to God and country, but something you should have the choice on whether or not you want to do it. Honestly, if there ever was a draft, I wouldn't fight. I'd register as a conscientious objector because I am a pacifist and don't believe war is ever justified.

You could serve in non combatant positions.

Depends on your age. If you were of military age when there was still a draft you are good.

Would not hurt IMO. Yet what a personnel management nightmare.

I would support everyone when graduating HS attend basic training that summer and be back for fall semester for college. Then drill with a Guard or Reserve unit. The next summer going to their specific MOS training.

Good news is it puts some dough in their pockets and gives an opportunity to have the specific service help with student loan repayment.

Those that don't meet physical requirements can do community service at prisons, hospitals and Veterans homes.

So two years not full time and then they serve two more years in the Reserves or Guard.

This is the type of model South Korea employs and a few other nations.

The good news for young people is they will have their own healthcare coverage through Tricare if in the Reserves or Guard.

My apologies--you have had first-hand experience. Your description just sounded very different from the students with whom I work. Of course I'm only dealing with academics, perhaps that makes a difference.

Perhaps, but I don't see how the logical solution is to bar women from enlisting.
I'm happy enough for women to enlist, it's mixed combat units I suspect will be problematic. Sexual tension and all that goes with it is simply an unnecessary complication in one of the most extreme situations humans are expected to face.

I don't buy that explanation of increased resources. Go sign up.

Accept the fact women are now grunt soldiers like men so need to tow the line too with Selective Service.

I applaud the Services for opening all military occupations to women. This will allow female soldiers and officers the opportunity to be in the muddy boots Army and get the experience they need to lead at the higher levels.
How do you tow a line? With a rope and a truck?

Man.... men in this country are a bunch of big cry babies, "Why can't women be in the draft also since I have to sign up? Its unfair!" Ah suck it up buttercup. I wish such big whiny cry babies would just move to canada already.

Suck it up and accept inequality?

Yeah, no thanks.

With the shallowness of modern feminism I really do think requiring women to sign up for the selective service will provide an important lesson, something we desperately need to boost morale for all those who are disillusioned by the phony strive for equality by tumblr feminist types.

Oh Bleck! Feminism of this flavor you speak of isn't the only ones 'disillusioned'. They certainly aren't the only ones - or movement even - that can be classified by shallow either. That is a disease that goes way past this small little blip on the radar.

It may give some a temporary high to rub their noses in something, but will that solve the shallowness, and disillusioned? Not even a speck. You may have a few beers in celebration, and then get to hear for years and years about them being targeted and what not. Remember the professionalism of victimhood here!

With the technology we have to today? We don't need anyone to register. It's something from the past that the government wants to waste more money for. If the server with ALL that information for the SS was blown up, and World War III started do you seriously think they couldn't find a list - phones, address, emails, facebook, etc to track down able body humans?

Goodness knows I would LOVE an important lesson, and boost morale too! The media is only ones that think those whiners are big and powerful. NORMAL females? They along with the men today would walk into a recruiting office if we needed able body humans today. They were not raised to be pregnant, barefoot, and in the kitchen...lol as the past stereotype goes! Remember it was MEN that started that silly rule and list. MEN have evolved past it too. (shrugs) Although you still have militants there as well. Thank the LORD they are the minority!

lol if anyone thinks this will payback the nutters in the world? Your dreaming! You are just enabling their victimhood! They won't feel paid back - they will whine LOUDER! In the end - it means nothing.

Can't we think of a better reality check?
