Hi everyone.

Do you think Christians are allowed to drink alcohol?

I can find a lot of verses against it, and some verses not against it and I don't know.

I know that drinking alcohol until you get drunk is a sin, but what if I meet with family / friends and drink a little wine or beer but don't get drunk?

I know there are a lot of articles about this issue but I'm curious about your opinions.

God Bless you.

It depends on the Christian. The Scriptures are clear that drunkenness is a sin, so if a Christian struggles with that, alcohol could be sin to them. However, I see nothing in Scripture that demonstrates alcohol to be inherently sinful.

You mentioned that there are verses that are against alcohol. Which ones are? Maybe I can explain it to you.

It's hard for me to decide. In the past I drank alcohol to get drunk, because I escaped to it. I was not addicted to it, but when I drank with my "friends" I always drank a lot. Now, as a Christian I don't know if I should drink a little (without getting drunk) or not. I found an article wit ha lot of verses from the bible about wine, for example:

Proverbs 20:1

Proverbs 21:17

Ah yes, good old proverbs. 20:1 tells us the result of those who succumb to its power. Alcohol has power over some people. They should avoid it.

For Proverbs 21:17, here's what the amplified version says. It's quite revealing:

He who loves [only selfish] pleasure will become a poor man;
He who loves and is devoted to wine and [olive] oil will not become rich.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

Seeing as how Jesus drank wine, it would be hard to argue that Christians aren't allowed to drink alcohol. So you're free to drink as long as you don't get drunk, but not everything that is allowable is beneficial. Pretty much everyone who starts drinking thinks that they will be able to control it, but that doesn't turn out to be the case for many of them. Alcohol has ruined the lives of many, many people, and not just the lives of those who choose to drink. I think it's like playing with fire, but if you choose to drink, then be very firm about limiting yourself to how much you drink, and don't talk yourself into drinking more than that.

Lots of scripture cautions about drinking wine/or strong
drink.
Don't get intoxicated/ or drunk.

Nor cause someone to stumble...whether by food or drink...
if someone is weak, it's best not to drink or have meat etc
if it's causes one to stumble.
Have a strong regard for the other person than to indulge
in something that will cause another to stumble...since
we're to accept a weaker brother(believer.)
Romans 14:13-23.

It don't hurt me none at all to forego drinking or eating of
meat if I'm around those who don't embrace it.

Wine and champagne flowed freely at the Christmas family
dinner on the Sunshine coast this year I didn't have any... because there were ones there who would stumble...others indulged.

I consume very little wine or strong drink.

Some people seem to be able to drink without getting drunk but thats why theres limits set in place, like i think its two glasses tops for women and three for men. I dont know i dont drink alcohol as dont like the taste and it makes me sick and vomit.

Theres lots of verses against getting drunk in the bible

Eg. In corinthians it says drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of heaven, also that we are to drink the cup of the Lord not the cup of the devils. They were chastised because when moses came down from the mountain they were drunk and partying and worshipping idols. Paul wrote that carry on was not on.

Also most people recognise alcohol as the demon drink. I have lost a lot of friends to it. But thankfuly Jesus has set some of them free and they are no longer alcoholics.

In galatians drunkness is listed as a work of the flesh but the one of the fruits of the holy spirit is temperence, or, as some translations say, self control. Temperence has come to mean abstaining from alcohol. You do not need to drink it everyday or binge drink. Also its very toxc for pregant women and children, which is why if you under 18 or 21 most countries laws forbid it to be sold to people underage.

Also in the book of revelation the harlot of babylon was drinking the wine of fornication. In many cases wine or alcohol is used in fornication, i guess because of the intoxicating effects making you less inhibited, and not remmebering afterwards. People often drink to forget bad things, but it only makes them happy for a little while. Its basically acts like a powerful liquid drug.

There is nothing in the bible that says drinking alcohol is wrong for everybody. Indeed there are a number of passages where we see use of alcohol including Jesus first miracle. Since the bible instructs people to not tempt others to sin and that causing others to stumble is sinful then the only conclusion one can arrive at is that Jesus was sinful and therefore not an acceptable sacrifice IF alcohol is always wrong.

Others have mentioned several relevant passages that speak of anything if it causes a problem for a fellow believer. However you mentioned you used to drink to get drunk. That makes things a bit more challenging for you. First I would ask what is (or would be) your motive for drinking alcohol? God judges the heart not outward appearance.
I used to drink kinda heavy. About 8 spirits a session. I could easily function on that. If I tried drinking the same amount now I would most definitely be drunk. See the longer you drink the more you can handle without getting drunk but functions do get impaired which is unavoidable. So my 8 drinks was probably too much. I now have a couple of drinks with friends when we get together for dinner each school holidays. I am mindful that I can not drink that much anymore and will switch to soft drinks after a couple. Only you can really know your limits and that is if you are honest with yourself. I did go for ten years without drinking any alcohol. It started when my wife and I started going out. She said it would be a struggle for her if I continued to drink. So I stopped. It did not have a grip on me.

So would drinking perhaps lead to you to get drunk because of past experience? If so then I would say for you it is sinful.

I used to used to say a person who even if they only have one drink a year and need to give up that drink and can't is an alcoholic. That doesn't cover everything but is a good guide to start with.

Thank you for your answer. No, I don't want to drink to get drunk again. It is not my motivation. That time was before my "born again" experience. I just will meet with my friends today evening and would like to have a few beers, and don't know if I should. I won't drink too much, I won't get drunk again that is for sure. Those time is over. And I am sure I will not give in the temptation. We used to drink too much with my friends as I mentioned earlier, but last time we met we had some wine and beer but only a few and I was not drunk. (I don't think others were neither)

My motive is just to have some fun and have some beers while talking with my friends. Not getting drunk for sure. :) What is your opinion after knowing this?

Technically, It's extremely difficult to argue against alcohol when Jesus drank wine frequently. The problem with alcohol described in the bible is drunkenness. So, you going with family and friends to have a couple of beers or a little wine is not sinful. Or even getting a little drunk every now and then. The problem is getting so succumbed to drink that you become a completely different person.

I have personally experienced what drunkenness can do a person. My father is an alcoholic who uses alcohol to solve all of his problems. My father has been excessively drinking since I was 8 years old. My father frequently beat on me throughout my life. For almost 20 years I lived like this. Especially when he was drinking or still drunk at the time but, also after he was "sobering up". My father has hit my mother once, in front of me while drunk.

My father is/was a completely different man than the man I knew as a little boy. He has caused our family much grief, tears, and pain. We have done nothing but pray, that he recovers and finally one day sees the light before, It's too late. I want my father back.

My late grandfather drank much more than my father did. He always had a beer in his hand and would drink from the time he got up until the time he went to bed. I remember my late grandfather during these times as an extremely mean, grumpy, and miserable person. He never gave me any of the love that a grandfather should have. My mother told me stories of how he used to not be that way and just one day, after all of his kids grew up decided to resolve his problems with beer.

She told me stories of how kind of a man he was, about how he worked so hard to support his family, never swore,

It was so unbelievable because, I never knew my Grandfather that way.

But, then around when I was 16 or so he had a massive stroke and couldn't drink for many months. The stroke had almost completely crippled him and I visited him every single day in the hospital and nursing home that he stayed in.

I slowly began to see the man my mother said existed. He was kind, he was loving, and while he hated being in a nursing home *cough* he was a Grandfather to me for the first time in my life and I felt loved by him.

It was half too late though, a few years later he had a second massive stroke which permanently crippled him and he was stuck in a nursing home until the day he passed away. I went to his funeral though, and remember thinking "How can this happen? This isn't real. We haven't had nearly enough time together."

I cherish the time that I got to spend my Grandfather though. Even if, it felt way too short.

It is because of these life experiences, that I do not want to become an alcoholic and that I set my limits. I personally have never had a BAC over the legal limit before and I intend to keep it that way. I will not become the abusive father that my father was and I will not end up like that.

Outright I do not think so. For the scriptures tell us to drink a lil wine for the stomach. The other side of the coin and the flip side as it states; "drunkenness" is unacceptable. Therefore in my understanding just as it states "a lil" wine/alcohol is okay in slight moderation.

Having a social drink now and then is okay, but we have to remember that in our hearts drunkenness, debauchery and gluttony are THOSE which we must remain steadfast and resist.

Praise be to GOD the heavenly father and his son lord JESUS CHRIST forever>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

like everything lifeless, alcohol is neither good nor evil; it's the intent of the heart that makes the use of alcohol either good or evil.

Deu 14:22-29 KJV
(22) Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
(23) And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
(24) And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
(25) Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose:
(26) And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,
(27) And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee.
(28) At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:
(29) And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

this is God giving the israelites instructions about tithing (He wanted them to be sure to celebrate His goodness to them, so He told them to save up for a big party); surely God knew what would happen as a result of His instruction in verse 26...

Joh 2:9-10 KJV
(9) When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
(10) And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

when Jesus changed the water into wine, it was after the wedding guests had already consumed all the wine that was available (they had already 'well drunk') - surely He knew the effect that even MORE wine would have!

both instances were celebrations of God's goodness received; not instances where people were trying to forget the misery in their lives. it's the reason why you drink that makes drinking good or evil; and whether or not you're listening for God to say 'that's enough for now' :)

You can actually have non alcoholic wine or wine thats been fermented that doesnt have the toxic effects, nowadays most of the intoxication is due to the pesticides used in production, like also how tobacco contains all these chemicals causing cancer when it didnt used to before.

The OP isnt drinking wine hes drinking beer though. Though People say that wine is the classy way of becoming ----faced or [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]ed.

I would just pray and ask God to lead me out of tempation and give me the will to say NO. People that drink regualarly and often tend to become alcoholics. You can drink drinks eithout alchohol and save your money. Most alcoholic drinks come with a warning label.

Tea is a healthy drink and good for you. It is soothing. Also fresh juice, and fresh smoothies are good for you and contain nutrients, wheras beer and other alcoholic drinks dont contain any vitamins.
