Some church planting ideas are very basic. I took classes on this and find that in reality it needs alot of modifications. For example the basic idea you draw people at a recreation hall or something is very 1950's. Our current culture does not have so much for that. The best practicality is getting your friends and other ministers involved. The idea you take tithe to rent somewhere after you have this group is realistic yet I have seen that some non denoms rent buildings for their poineer pastor after he makes a group. Both work yet realistically it can be modified in many ways. The best most effective is that many people have homes to start something. Legal or not in your area its worth a try with some craftiness. The idea you will have a church building in 20-30yrs is lost on this generation. Usually theyd give up and just apply to pastor in an established church.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but...

A question in the back of my mind recently: how are church plants typically funded?

I assume they're either funded by out of the church planter's own pockets, the church plant's own congregation or a mother/sponsor church. Just curious as to what other people have seen before.

There are many different ways of financing a new church-plant, depending on what kind of church you plant, who takes the initiative for the planting, and in which country you plant.

Some churches are planted “organically”. That is without a big overarching plan. Somebody starts to gather a few people for prayer and Bible study. This may grow into a bigger church. In such examples the initial costs are minimal. The church could meet in homes or rent a place only on Sunday. In the beginning, there may be no paid staff. The costs are increased only as the church grows in numbers.

Other churches are planted by the initiative of a denomination or similar network of churches. A denomination may decide to start a new congregation somewhere. It will then call somebody to lead the work of this new congregation. In such examples, there is a often a plan on how to finance the new church. It can look like this: First year the denomination pays 100 % - second year 75% - third year 50% - fourth year the new church need to raise all its finances themselves.

There are several other models as well, so these are just examples
