Sex and morality, what makes sex so important?

Why is sex so morally important to us as human beings?

Rape is one of the most heinous crimes.
Children are protected from sex because it can traumatize us.
Sexual orientation is a very big deal in our culture.

So why is sex so important? Why do we view matters involving sex with such importance?

There appears to be two different questions, so I will address each one.

1. Why is sex so morally important to us as human beings?

I didn't realise sex was so "morally" important to us as human beings, but as religious beings there seems to be some emphasis on the "morality" of sex. Religious people tend to have a lot of fear and guilt issues regarding sex, in my opinion. Sexual orientation is only a big deal in a culture where religion is prevalent.

2. Why do we view matters involving sex with such importance?

If the matter is a crime then generally there is a victim. If there is a victim then the matter is important. If the matter is someones sexual orientation then its none of your business.
But the most important thing about Sex is that it is a necessary function, without sex, we would not exist.

Sex is part of our hard wiring, in the centre of the body, the source of new life.
Sex can pit the well being of a presence, body and mind, against mere feelings, the apparent need for gratification. People love the pleasure and will abort foetuses to continue the better feeling lifestyle.

Sex involves an agreement between the persons. Involves the will.

Sex effects the most important things in life.
Friendship
Love
Esteem
Sanctity
Honour
F.L.E.S.H. and acronym.

Also it effects the history of the body as from 1 Cor 3.
And the history of the mind, will and emotions, which is profound, and a matter of honour and cause. There are soul ties. These can conflict with past friendships, present or future ones. Or our relationships with our parents and siblings.

It effects pleasure and happiness. What we are happy with shows our love, 1 Cor 13.
It effects money matters.
It leads to children, a matter of honour and great cost.
Actions speak louder than words.

FLESH... is deeply effected and even changed by sex. Changing past present and future friendship...
Lust and love compete and conflict. Love can be shown to a friend's adversary, it can be betrayal. It can end your career in politics.
What gives people self esteem? Sex effects that.
Regarding holiness, two become one flesh, instead of separate from the world unto God. It can change a person's character.
To know someone intimately, the appearance, voice, face, emotion's high's, the will, to have the focus, the choice, the seed, the inner space is a matter of honour. On a one person level, the heart and seed is the highest honour there is. A zygote were it not for other people on the world, is more weighty than the Earth.
Also from having children we carry honour. And it can be poured away into the gutter, instead of, a pond, if you like. It become a street boast. I think we can love another's honour and protect it. We can preserve it. We can be in agony if it is lost.

  1. (Most) people want it more than almost anything else. Whatever a person's feelings and actions on the matter, it's a passionate subject.
  2. Trends in sexuality and sexual behavior have a huge impact on any society (birth rates, the structure of the family, etc.).

Because we're afraid of it... When you look at the way language works you'll find that the concepts which carry the most fear also have the most euphemisms: sex, genitalia, death.

I find your response to be the most interesting, I think it speaks volumes about your character.

Sex and sexuality evokes very powerful emotions in people at both ends of the spectrum. It lies at the center of long term relationships between loved ones. In times gone past, sex was used as a means of domination, ownership, and cemented leaders within groups. Sex is kind of a big deal, and has been for a large part of human history.

Also, any community needs to have agreed upon rules where it concerns sex so that people know what is expected from them.

1) Rape is one of the worst crimes because it deeply violates ones bodily integrity. It isn't so much about the sex bit. It's an extreme sort of slavery, and a violation of what is almost your very self.

2) I'd think sex harms children because they aren't sexual and ready for it. Sex itself isn't bad... it's that the person isn't ready.

3) Sexual orientation is only important because some people of some orientation are considered as worse. Once there is proper acceptance we won't care.

Views on sex are generally and primarily cultural. Religion can--and usually does--inform a society's view of sex, but even in societies which share a religious history there can be significant differences. We can, for example, notice societal views on sex that are markedly different between the United States and Mainland Europe, both the US and Europe are historically predominantly Christian societies, but American and European views on sex can look dramatically different. Some might argue this is because the United States is a more religious nation overall, except that in terms of percentages European nations have about the same, and in some cases more, numbers of Christians. Though I understand that this can at least be in part regarded because numbers are counted less by actively religious and more by church membership rolls and the role of state churches in European countries.

Sex is important because it is mechanism for why we're here.

As far as pain form sexual assault/rape, I am not sure. Perhaps there is a strong biological urge against being violated by someone without your consent because you want the best genes to mix with. You don't want just any loser to be able to procreate with you. I am not sure if there are any studies, but it would be interesting if rape victims have an urge to abort or perhaps kill a baby born out of a rape. Same with the father or the local community at large.

Rape is a crime, it's about power and violating someone. It's done through sex, but rape is not 'about' sex. Not sure why that was tossed into the equation.

It is about sex for some.

Sex is not morally important, sex is important to survival of the species and we have evolved to be motivated to have sex.

Well controlling the sex drive, restricting it to ritualized breeding is a great way to get a lot of built up frustration. If you then give the people some scapegoat to ve\nt their anger on....

Right now Islam is a perfect example, twice over. One can clearly see how effective it has been here with some venting everything on Islam. One with just a little imagination will realize it is just as effective over in the Middle East. Perhaps a bit more so as even in the most repressive parts of the West we are at least allowed to look and hope.

Well, one writer, Robert Heinlein, opined that survival of the species is the only valid basis for any moral code.

He also said what I did in the post before yours, much better than I did and in more general terms.

Violating someone with power through other means don't nearly traumatize as much.

A bully beating me bloody, might be bad, but it's worse if he took off my pants and raped me, even without a beating.

Some celibate monks are the most calm and peaceful in the world. Their sex drives are controlled hard, painfully hard.

Or they naturally have very low sex drives. People's libido varies.
