Ok so the other night I was reading the bible with my 4 year old. We were reading about Adam and Eve and came across the part where God says "if you eat of the tree you will surely die". So like a typical 4 year old, he started asking a lot of questions and I tried to explain to him how death entered the world through Adam and eve's sin. Then I found out tonight that now he's telling people " if your bad, God will kill you".
Oops, that wasn't the way I wanted to get the message across. And now I have a few people in the family pretty upset with me. So the advice I want: how do I fix this? And how do I teach him these things in a way I can sugarcoat them yet at the same time not lie.

Your child is young, so give him the "milk"
of God's Word.

I'm sorry you have family members upset over
something a little four year child said...seriously,
do they not know that a youngster easily mixes
stuff up? Try not to be too hard on yourself over
this little "infraction".

Exactly what are you wanting your toddler to understand?
Are you referring to how to talk to him about death?
Or are you trying to explain creation?
Or something else?

Ya, he's asking me the questions about death. That tells me he's old enough to start talking about it, since he's asking me the questions. It's just hard to sugarcoat it without lieing. I don't want him growing up thinking if your good you go to heaven. I want him to understand we go to heaven because of Jesus, not because we're good because that's heretical. Obviously I'm not gonna get into the topic of hell anytime soon though. But I want him to understand this in a way a 4 year old can grasp it yet not scare the pajibas out of him.

You have my sympathies. This situation happened to us, too. At 4 years of age, would he understand that this type of death didn't mean that they died immediately but that they couldn't walk with Yahweh in the cool of the day and had to move from the garden (v 23)

I would turn it toward the break in relationship between God and A & E. You can explain to no longer enjoy a relationship with God is the horrible death A & E experienced. This leads naturally in talking about how wonderful it is to enjoy a relationship with God and how Jesus made it possible.

BTW, it may be disconcerting to your family members, but your son is spot on in his theology. :)

Hope this helps.

I kinda go along with Hospes. I would sit him down and explain that there are two kinds of death. A spiritual death and a physical death. Then, with as little detail as possible, explain what those two mean. Finally, tell him that A&E suffered a spiritual death, i.e., separation from God, because they disobeyed Him. God still loved them, but He was now more distant from them than He was before. But they regained their closeness to Him after they became sorry for their disobedience. (It's been quite a while since I've had a child that young! :-()

Yeah but nobody expects for their four year old to say God kills bad people and instead of a friend it's a family member. One might become annoyed.

Op
Since the family is mad maybe get together with your elders and see what they believe is proper.

Yes out of the mouths of babes...

I think its great you reading the bible with your children. My mum never did that with me.
As for death explain that Jesus came to save us from sin and death and through him we do have eternal life, of course, you may need to skip a lot of books to get to the good part.
Also, explain that, its not God who wants to kill us. He is our Father. Its that tricky serpent satan who wants to destroy us and trick us into being bad. If we listen to the devil and not God or Jesus then our lives are going to be cut short and we wont be forever with God.
