Now the World Cup is over...what's next?

Before the RWC I would watch rugby when it was on but never really got into it. I didn’t follow a league or team just watched in awe and when it was over went back to watching MMA. I don’t care if it’s League or Union, what’s next up to watch in terms of rugby?

Thanks,
jm

It depends on what programming you have. There is an English Premier match on tonight for me. WASPs vrs someone.

There have been one tournament here in California, local leagues (playing Union) are starting soon. I'll be going out to watch the Oxy Olde Boys and both the men's and women's college sides. And of course drink and sing with the players afterwards. Unless the Olde Boys are badly short in which case it will be time to lace up the boots again.

Perhaps I will finally play Scrum Half (the only position out of 15 I have not played).

There is plenty of rugby on TV here in the UK .... on Sky Sports, e.g. Top 14 Rugby but I am looking forward to the Super Rugby next year which I think starts in February ,,,, there are teams from New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, and two new teams from Argentina and Japan competing. Following that competition I believe there are some international matches and then the Super Rugby competition around July (I think) starts and will feature the national teams of New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina playing each other both at home and away. Most of these are shown on Sky Sports.

I learned of Rugby watching the movie, Four Feathers. I'm a big fan of American football so I thought to watch a few games on the sports channels here. Forget about it. Unless I'm willing to borrow a book from the library to learn what's going on it's just not easy to understand in relative comparison to football.
I like it though. All that game violence and no pads! ^_^ That's bold!

No pads is the easy part. The fitness required is the tough part, especially with the rule change of about 20 years ago related to who get to put the ball in to a the scrum after a maul where the ball becomes unplayable. (It took out a way to intentionally get a stoppage when isolated with the ball and resulted in far fewer chances to rest a bit).

That's way over my head. I saw a fumble of the ball, that looks every bit like a football, and low and behold a player picks it up and keeps running and that's all in the rules. In American football a fumble is treated differently in the rules.
And the huddle in Rugby. It's all confusing though I do agree that the level of fitness in the athletes would have to be top notch.

It's not that difficult to understand. The basic idea is to get the ball to the opposition's end zone in order to score a "try" (which differs from a touchdown in that the ball must be grounded).

The biggest differences between rugby and American football are probably that the ball cannot be passed forward (although it can be kicked ahead), and there are no separate offensive and defensive teams - barring a limited number of substitutions, players are expected to be on the field for the entire 80 minutes. And, obviously, very little in the way of protective equipment.

And no blocking.

The Laws of Rugby are actually much shorter and clearer than those of American Football. Of course since there isn't a stop of 45 seconds every 15 seconds of action there isn't the time for the officials and announcers to explain in detail every ruling.

Thanks. :) Just watching from time to time doesn't clue one in on the rules.

Doh, I'm slow. A chance to pimp my buddies book!

You might want to pick up Rugby for Dummies.

Matt Brown and Pat Guthrie are both Americans and both played for both Occidental College and the Oxy Olde Boys (as did I). Matt is a capped player for Latvia. To translate that means he played for the national side of Latvia. Both have been involved in broadcasting Rugby matches in the United States for years.

Oh and the last time I won man of the match honors it was the whole front row that received it. That was Pat at loose head, Mike (another player and youth coach) at hooker and me at tight head.

If you read that book you should have a pretty good idea. Or for that matter google 'rugby for dummies', it will pick up some online instruction also.

Figured this is the place to brag about my most recent score. I was lucky enough to end up with one of the Jerseys from Invictus. Really cool as it is a very good reproduction. Heavy cotton, the emblems are embroidered directly into the jersey and the number is sown on. Number 3, tight head, the position I played the most often.

Anyone out there who enjoys watching rugby union?
Who's gonna win the six nations this time?
Saturday's opening match between Ireland and Scotland was rugby at its best.
Maybe England not looking so much the favourite after just scraping it passed France?
