So who here does answer the call to action to help their fellow human when they see them in need? Does anybody here think that praying for the person but taking no action when you could take action is the proper way to do things?
The Christian way is to help them AND pray for them. I especially have a soft heart for the homeless. I'll leave it at that.

So I don't understand why this person is trying to separate the two. Other than it being altered by an atheist to push an agenda.
They aren't. They're simply saying that a person should give direct help and not just say that they'll pray for them. That's the point of it. That's all.

I typically only see "I'll pray for you" online because nothing else can really be done. You're at least letting the anonymous person know that you care and are doing *something*.

It's a lesson for those who might do that. I've seen it happen. Not all lessons are for everybody but for those who would fail them.

I can think of a story all about not stopping charity because a rich person poses as a poor person to collect alms. That doesn't happen much but it's there for people who need it.

St. James is pretty clear on the matter.

The way it was presented, perhaps, but I don't think that was the intention of the quote. Plus I'm pretty certain there are translation issues here.

I guess so. It just sounds more like the 'I'm spiritual, not religious' tripe I get from my quasi-Buddhist step mother to solidify her self-perception of spiritual superiority.

It isn't.

Well, the message I got was 'I'm an atheist. I do good because I want to. You got religion. You do good because your commanded to'.

I'm not in competition here. I'll just go ahead and admit, quasi-Buddhists and atheists are spiritually superior.

I hope they're happy now.

The guy isn't an atheist though, so it doesn't hold true.

But, he's pointing to atheists as some sort of spiritual example and makes some real blunders in doing so. I'm not unfamiliar with these kind of tactics.

The tale is probably a couple of hundreds of years old. We're not talking about some modern tale told by atheists. It's likely German in origin and likely badly translated since the book it's translated in is available now on Amazon for the hefty price of one penny. He's pointing to atheists who do good as doing it for motives beyond what it gets them and saying that his students should, likewise, help people. If you want to be offended by it, I'm not going to be able to stop you but I think it's a massive overreaction.

St. Luke tells us we are but 'unprofitable servants and only doing what we should be'. That's why this quote is such a major fail.

I'm not sure what lesson we can take from atheist charity when it also comes attached with the message, "there is no God".

Besides, I'm trying to count how many atheist food banks there are in my community. At this point, I'm up to zero.
