Question for boys. What do you think of men who refuse to be the breadwinners of their households? And not because they have maybe a disability or got made redundant or any legitimate reason.

I would regard him as irresponsible.

I think they are bums. The Bible says that a man who will not support his family is worse than an infidel.

If a man wants to provide for his family by being a stay-at-home dad, and the wife can financially support it, then I don't see a reason anything wrong with that. That may be different than laziness. I'm going to be a teacher, there's a good chance my wife is going to make more than me.

Note the word "refuse" in the post you responded to, old chap.

I think choosing to be a stay-at-home dad, in a sense, is refusing to the breadwinner.

I would argue it is not a refusal if it is not contrary to the wishes of the spouse. The word "refuse" implies active dissent.

Clarifying question, are you talking about him being the sole breadwinner or just him Asking for help ?

Well if he was the sole breadwinner he wouldn't be married because a wife is a helper. She cooks or bakes the bread. The question means what it says. If you don't work, you don't eat.

If there's no breadwinning going on, there isn't going to be any bread to eat is there?

If there's no legitimate reason, then I've gotta judge him as a bum.

Ok so I havent read the whole thread so sorry if this has already been asked. what is a guy's opinion of guys who "talk big"? I know alot of guys that do and am kind of afraid this might be the norm, lol.
If someone talks big, he'd better be more than just talk, or all that talking is going to come back to bite him. Some guys hide behind it. The more outrageous his claims, the more hollow he likely is.

As to whether or not it's normal, you're not noticing the quiet guys who prefer not to open their mouths unnecessarily. Which is a natural consequence of not talking too much.

We try to get those guys to be humble , it's something everyone struggles with to be honest

Most guys just shrug at the all talk guys. They're pretty easy to spot in their exaggerations and attitude.

Who are you talking to?
Did someone die and you were too cheap to even provide a burial plot? I dont understand some men. They spend a heap of money on cars and boys toys but they couldnt even provide a decent burial for their loved ones.
Heard a talk years ago by a funeral director who explained many of the tricks they use to convince you to spend more. Especially if your funeral is already paid for they will try and talk family into upgrading or getting extras. He said "If you're not prepared to spend money on someone when they are alive why spend it on them when they are dead". I think thats great advice. Personally I want the cheapest possible coffin and to be cremated and the family can do whatever they like with them including throwing them in the bin if they want. While I went to my Uncle's funeral (only because my cousin paid for the plane tickets) it was nowhere near as good as going a couple of months earlier and saying goodbye in person. Obviously that can't happen in every situation but if one can it is far better.

I don't know... I guess I've studied quite a bit of child development psychology so may be better at raising children than my partner. My partner has a degree in chemistry and has worked for IT development for around 10 years, I think she may be better at getting money than me. I'm more the bookworm who reads theology, philosophy, biblical studies and history texts - thanks to capitalism these things are economically redundant. ;-)

Wow what a bunch of judgmental people we have in regards to the breadwinner question. To me it made good sense for my wife to work full time and me part time and be primary carer. My wife earnt in two days what I earnt in a week. That way we were able to have some luxuries like a weekend away at a nice hotel with our child. It meant we could attend family gatherings for significant occasions such as milestone birthdays and also accept invited to weddings especially when one of us was asked to be bridesmaid or groomsman. I put forward the idea and discussed it with my wife and it was the decision we came to. I see that as providing. While it hasn't been much of a problem lately I have a medical condition which when first came on in a big way resulted in memory loss. I only had a three years of high school left and basically had to start from close to the beginning. I am talking about years of education being flushed away. So that put me behind and meant I couldn't get into Uni at the time with the way things were set up so I had to take a unskilled job. Now I don't know what it is like in other places but here in Oz experience is everything. It is so difficult to the point where it is almost impossible to switch career from one industry to a different one.
