• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I've had panic attacks before, but I'm far more prone to anxiety attacks which happen every other day for me. It's been a while since I've had a genuine, unprovoked panic attack.
What's the difference between anxiety and panic attacks? I always thought they were one and the same.

Off the top of my head, anxiety is being in a state of anxiousness. It's a rather steady state. Like being on edge all day long. A panic attack is a super-heightened state of fear that's unexplainable. You feel as if you are in eminent danger and you have to run. You may feel as if you can't breathe and the world is closing in on you. You may get hot flashes and generally feel physically uncomfortable. I've had both and they are not the same. But they are directly related.

I've also heard that an anxiety attack is the "breaking point" of accumulative stress; sort of like a mini-nervous breakdown from continually dealing with a tangible difficulty. Panic attacks are completely unprovoked and come with more serious physical symptoms; I've heard of people who've had panic attacks that they mistook for having a heart attack.

I was in counseling for 3 years because I was in a deep depression after the onset of my anxiety and panic attacks. Plus I did a lot of reading and developed some tactics against panic attacks which actually work. It was a long battle. I still struggle with depression and all that. But it's minor compared to what I initially went through.
