Well not unexpected or surprising except for the way it happened. One if my dogs is a chewer...bad! He'll tear up couch pillows, the couch itself (had to replace one) so I try, TRY to keep tabs on him. OK, I have a library book I'm reading and just before bed I put it on my nightstand, foolishly thinking it was safe. You guessed it. Now I owe the library $16.00

He needs a smacked bot

He needs an attentive and authoritative pack-leader

That! (destructive behaviour) is a 'no-no' here

Puppies are still-learning, adult dogs need re-training

Wow! that pic of you with dogs - what wonderful friends you have....
I have my 'friends' but have been thinking today how much longer I can keep up with ...
caring for feral cats! have you got them in your area? we have heaps here in Kilburn SA
I've buried 3 in my garden where people must have poisoned them (I heard one wailing all night)
15 got sent to the council in those cages.. and it upset me so much I threw up my hands saying - No more! I will feed these - THREE - and look after them making sure I don't include anymore as the remainders seems to belong to neighbours.
I've had 2 des-sexed (the grown kittens of the 'Mum') but SHE is so fly - she has just had 3 more kittens (I mean bout 6 weeks ago) so I have to include them and get them de-sexed but I must get this Mum done! I will need someone to help me grab her to get her in the cage. The others I've tamed (and I love them) but she remains part-feral - mind - she is crafty as she 'loves and pets' like the others when the food is there...once it's gone she reverts to the wild..
Last time I took She 'Baby' (her grown baby) after council help the vet quoted me $90 When I went (taxi-ed) to pick her up they demanded $230! (you know- for pain etc.....) and I didn't have it. I phoned my daughter she was at a school meeting (a High School Principal) and came to my aid paying by phone. I'm just hoping these kits are not girls as the boys don't cost much. But today... I came back from the supermarket and was shocked to see how much I had been spending on them there is always something to get from Coles. The chicken necks are cheap and they love them - but they swallow them whole! for fear the others will get more then them and this causes problems.. It seems they are going to keep me poor

Do you physically discipline your dogs? Mine usually Acts up when i'm away. I keep them in the kitchen but sometimes they escape. He's smart which is good and bad!

No, I have no need to resort to physical-discipline

I bred and raised German Shepherds for just over 20 years
and it was nothing, for me to walk into an arguing threesome and END IT

From the word 'go' ~I dominate, the will of the dog
expl' ..... I put it on a lead ....and do not allow it, to wander around, at-will
I hand feed at the dish and it will wait, between offerings
and I will take away the dish, if it eats, faster than it can swallow
When playing with the dog, I NEVER let it 'win'
When I say "STOP", it looks at me ~and waits to hear what comes next
When the dog argues 'who, is in control' it loses!!! (ALWAYS)

^^Once 'control' has been established, you only have to 'watch points'
eg: during visits from others outside, to be able to predict and pre-empt any possible naughtiness
"a stitch in time saves nine" ;)

My very first 'action'...
#1. Is, to raise my voice OVER any noise the dogs are making
ie: For them,_ _ _ DAD IS SPEAKING ... "STOP!!!!"

I then have the dog's attention
if I realise I do not have total obedience, I go for the biggest risk
to anyone, including the dog itself and hold the dog
if there is any unwillingness, to be seen /heard, in that dog
I will pin the dog to the floor, by it's neck and, hold it there
while keeping it's attention on me (with calm conversation)
until the dog is breathing calmly (not even simmering)
and, it has not reached 'the boil' (ie: is not listening)

I, am the 'pack-leader' and, what I say goes
I will not be disobeyed
or, countermanded ( "are you listening to me dog ?" )

The above, is circumvented ~with premonition,
in other words, if it can happen, I will nip it in the bud
BEFORE, that dog has even finished thinking about it (?)

Once the dog has it's fuse lit.... it can go off, at any moment

Far better, it learns that YOU, have a bigger bang
and must be respected....

PS: Love makes all of the difference, but, you do not reward bad behaviour with bad behaviour
It NEVER WORKS

OK, my dog chews :bbrr:EVERYTHING,!, He will take things off my nightstand. Well last nnight I was watching TVin my bedroom and fell asleep. Earlier Ihad sslipped my slippers off on the bed
I woke up this morning looking for them. I thought oh no he got them! I checked the nightstand, no. I felt under the bed far as I could, no. I was just getting up to see if he brought them into the kitchen to massacre them when I saw they were still on the bed where Ihad left them! Glad i didn't start yelling at him before I checked around. Good doggie

When an hour or more has passed
~since the dog committed any offence LET IT GO... (it won't remember !)

You cannot remind the dog that it has done any wrong

If you do not catch it in the act..... FORGET IT ....FORGIVE
but try.... to take precautions and prevent any NEXT-TIMES

#
Your dog lives in a 'habit' ~if it picks up a bad one
DISTRACT it with a GOOD HABIT
iow: repeat the good habit daily (several times each day) for several weeks

It may seem bothersome and even frustrating ....
but, the results of your persistence, will give you a lifetime of calm
needing only a curt word, "No!" to reinforce your past training
Your dog will turn somersaults ~just to please you

Well, don't know if these are a fit for the site but they were surprising to me! While walking my dog and realized something felt different.took me a few.minutes to notice no swarms of mosquitoes!!!.usually I spend
the walk fending them off and I'm not kidding when I say swarms. I live in North Central Florida, lots of creepy crawlees and critters. I'll admit. I did get bitten twice but I think it was a mistake.lol

Our dogs are not at-all bothered by our cats
and our cats will lay amongst them (without anxiety)

But when our dogs they see 'other-cats' locally, they create a ruckus (?)
and one can imagine the kerfuffle that would ensue
if, they could reach them (those, other cats)

Family, is loved and cared-for

That probably matches my adult dogs. I know it does for any cat that would threaten Grendel since I saw and heard Wheatley run full speed including through 2 doggie doors to aid Grendel when he was in a fight.

But not for Kip, the boxer we had as a kid. He decided the kittens of a feral cat who littered in our garage where his. She took the tip of his nose off and nothing changed. She finally gave up when nature called and by the time she got back all her kittens were covered in dog slobber.
