Mine do! - but I admit it took some years of being a Christian for this to happen

When I came from UK to Australia I had already become a Christian was used for deep ministry witnessing many miracles.
When I came to Oz I joined a lovely charismatic church that had powerful prayer.
It was lovely to watch the altar calls and so many going to the front to be saved and them mainly going up for prayer to get rid of various problems. They had a 'School Of The Way' for new Christians to be 'weaned' and put on Jesus' path. On Sunday mornings many of these would go up for prayer to get rid of various sins that had plagued them.
I was at that church for around 12 years. One day I picked up something about the Altar Call. I saw Christians going up for prayer for things that had plagued them for 10 years or so earlier!
After much prayer I came to this conclusion. We all have our weaknesses that we were born with. When we become a Christian Jesus doesn't take our weakness away they are part of us - that people know us by. He gives us the wisdom and strength to avoid them. It is our LIFE that he changes - not 'US' We remain the same with the same weaknesses that we were born with. So with all this singing,

I'm a new creation
I'm a brand new man
Old things are passed away
I'm born again
More than a conqueror that's who I am
I'm a new creation
I'm a brand new man

Is something we believe and hope for rather than is fact. He makes us new by helping us to live our lives in a different way with Gifts and insights to help us.
Since this time, my weaknesses have screamed at me! I talk to Him about them and can always rely on Him to help me through them but I never fail to accept this about me - I wish I could!

It is so easy to see the weaknesses of others THEY scream at us. Ours should do the same.

That's not too surprising.
It may take us a long time to realise that we have a certain fault/bad habit, confess it and be healed. Sometimes a person may do something wrong and not be able to forgive themselves or let go of the guilt, or sometimes a weakness, or hurt, may be deliberately supressed because the person thinks that is the best way to make it go away.

Really? That's a rather depressing thought.
So do you mean that if someone has a bad temper and flies off the handle easily; when they become a Christian, with a new heart and new mind, and knowing that Jesus died for their sins of anger and impatience, they will still not lose that fault that was part of their old, sinful nature because it was what made them, 'them'?
If so, how is anyone supposed to see the change that Jesus makes in their/our lives?

I've read many testimonies from people who've been involved with drugs, drink, the occult, who've completely renounced them and may in fact have devoted their lives to helping other addicts to faith in Christ. I've read about people who were unhappy, negative, had a tendency to criticise or be pessimistic, change and become happier, at peace, always ready to praise others, see the good in them and look on the bright side. I read about someone once - I think a teenager - who became a Christian but didn't want to tell anyone immediately "in case it didn't last"; a couple of days later someone said, "what's happened to you? You are happier, less critical and seem more serene."

So with all this singing,
I'm a new creation
I'm a brand new man
Old things are passed away
I'm born again
More than a conqueror that's who I am
I'm a new creation
I'm a brand new man

Is something we believe and hope for rather than is fact.
So the Scripture, "if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17) is untrue? And Scriptures about having died with Christ, (Romans 6:8-11) and put to death the deeds of the flesh, (Romans 8:13) or talk about the sins of the flesh contrasted with the fruit of the Spirit, (Galatians 5:16-25) are incorrect also?

Since this time, my weaknesses have screamed at me! I talk to Him about them and can always rely on Him to help me through them but I never fail to accept this about me - I wish I could!
Maybe, but I've heard it said that the close someone gets to Jesus, the more aware they are of their own sins and unworthiness. When Peter met the Lord for the first time, he fell on his knees and said "go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man" (Luke 5:8). But Jesus told him not to be afraid and to follow him.

If there are particular sins/faults which bother you, then the Lord can, and will, forgive and take them away. If you are the slightest bit tempted (and I'm not saying you are) to think 'that's just me; I can do nothing about that", then that will make the devil very happy, because that is a weakness that he can continue to work on and exploit. If it is covered by the blood of Jesus, he won't be able to see it.

You say..
Really? That's a rather depressing thought.

It is a fact that our weaknesses and imperfections - are part of us and our personality. These attract people to us more than our strengths. When we come to the Lord He gives us gifts to enable us to control these weaknesses. I've seen this in people for so many years, because if someone goes through dark patches and wanders from the path - and this happens to everyone at some time during their walk!....those old weaknesses re-emerge. Once they repent and get back on the path they finish up stronger than before.
I think it's very important that we are aware of our weaknesses Others can see them and so should we. It's no good Christians running away with the idea we are perfect because we are not.
God can heal us from everything. With regard drugs, A new Christian can certainly come off drugs. With their walk with God, He will help them with the weakness that 'created' the drugs i.e. an obsessive compulsive personality. If they stray from Him this could show up in another way like gambling etc.
'Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour'

It is a fact that our weaknesses and imperfections - are part of us and our personality.

Who says that they are?
We are all sinners and will never be perfect in this life. But if a person is rude, unkind, vain, greedy, proud or whatever, they are not endearing little character traits that make them who they are and we have to put up with them; they are sins. Scripture says that love is not rude or unkind, gluttony is a sin and the Lord hates proud, haughty or arrogant natures. Jesus died for all these sins, and many more besides.

These attract people to us more than our strengths.

Again, who says?
I don't know about you, but I am not attracted to proud, arrogant, rude, unkind people. I might notice them; if I was a teacher and had children like this in my class, they might get more of my attention and time, but I wouldn't smile fondly and say, "oh the little darling, he's got an arrogant personality!" I don't think any parent would want this for their child either. They'd do their best to correct it, because if they didn't, the child would grow up believing that they were better than anyone else and that the world owed them a favour.

When we come to the Lord He gives us gifts to enable us to control these weaknesses.

No, his Son died in agony so that we could be forgiven, and free from, our sins.

I've seen this in people for so many years, because if someone goes through dark patches and wanders from the path - and this happens to everyone at some time during their walk!....those old weaknesses re-emerge.

That may be, but that doesn't mean that they are part of the person's personality and something that they can't change.

Once they repent and get back on the path they finish up stronger than before.

Absolutely. But that's not what you just said.
You said before that a person's weaknesses are part of their personality and are what makes them who they are. If this was true then they shouldn't try to change; they couldn't help their rudeness, or whatever, any more than they could help having blue eyes. If you use the word 'repent', however, that implies that it is a sin - which is what I said

I think it's very important that we are aware of our weaknesses Others can see them and so should we. It's no good Christians running away with the idea we are perfect because we are not.

Agreed.
We acknowledge our sins and weaknesses as we become aware of them, ask Jesus to forgive us, and the Holy Spirit to change us into Jesus' image and give us the desire not to sin again.

Scripture does say that we are NEW creations and that the old has gone. It does not say that our weaknesses are part of our personalities, or that our sins define us and make us who we are.

With regard drugs, A new Christian can certainly come off drugs. With their walk with God, He will help them with the weakness that 'created' the drugs i.e. an obsessive compulsive personality.

What evidence do you have that drug addiction is caused by an obsessive, compulsive personality?

I went to a talk on addictions once, and the tutor, who had experience in this area, said that addiction - drugs, alcohol, work, gambling, sex, etc - starts when people have a traumatic/painful event in their lives. Rather than face, or deal with, the physical or emotional pain, they may take something to block it out, say, a drink. That might take the edge off, and also give them pleasure, so they may have another one. Or they may drink to forget. Because they haven't dealt with the pain, it will come back. They may find that having a drink is pleasant, whereas facing up to pain isn't, so they will keep drinking; the only trouble is that they will need to have more drink to produce the same feelings of pleasure that they had before, and gradually it becomes addictive. It may also become a habit - reach for something nice/sweet/pleasant, something that makes you feel good, rather than deal with emotional pain, hurt and upset.

The only sure way of dealing with such pain is to face it, talk it through and, if the person is a Christian, to ask the Lord Jesus to heal it.

I have learned the phrase "be ye still and know that I am God.
The word "still" means to drop whatever it is that you are doing.
Drop your tools. Drop your weapons. Drop your plans and vain efforts.
Stand back and watch the salvation of your God.

"Just get out of my way saith the Lord and I'll show you something..."

I'm sure you have totally misunderstood my post either by my bad explanation or by choice I do not know but I also spent ? over 50 years in ministry for the deepest of problems and have seen 50 years of miracles... Through that time I've been able observe not only the way The Lord works but human nature and I say that a persons' weaknesses stay with them as a Christian as they are part of the beautiful person that God made. If we walk with Him and get healed by The Lord those weaknesses will not lead us to sin except for a time after that we MAY stray -. People come off the path sometimes in their Christian walks.
For example.... a drug addict could have an obsessive compulsive type personality we call that 'a weakness' This weakness can create a famous artist or singer. It can also create a drug, smoking, gambling or sexual addiction. That addiction can be healed by God (often by replacing the bad addiction with a good one) but the 'personality' remains and problems can resurface (be it briefly) at a later date

We never should take our standing with God for granted. He will always be there when we need Him but we were also born and remain imperfect human beings. Have you not noticed how some longstanding pillars of the church can Fall From Grace by a sexual sin, fraud etc? It happens quite a lot and eyes boggle when this happens but if these people had been seen and treated like normal human beings with weaknesses like our own - their sins would have been less likely to have got out of hand.

Let's look at a brilliant accountant that was jailed for embezzlement. While he was in jail he gave his life to Jesus was released and became a strong church member. Would the church oversight put him in charge of the churches' finances? It would be foolish to do so, by tempting providence we put this man - and the church finances in harms' way

Maybe we mean different things by "weaknesses"?
If you mean, painful or hurtful experiences; you could be right. All the pain I felt when my brother died has been healed. The experience is still there; it still happened.
If you means sins, however, I still cannot agree. Jesus died for our sins; someone can be arrogant until they meet the Lord, then they will realise they have nothing to boast of because salvation was of him and nothing that they earned themselves. The Lord can forgive, remove and replace that arrogance. That doesn't mean that the devil won't try to tempt them, or whisper to them that they should be proud of how humble/spiritual they are now. But that arrogance is not part of their personality, something that makes them who they are and which they can do nothing about.
I don't doubt that some healings may be due to very deep seated sins being forgiven , or personal experiences being dealt with. Again, that does not mean that they are part of that person. If they were, there would be nothing to repent of - the person would be repenting, changing their minds about, and turning their backs on, themselves and their very own personality.

He will always be there when we need Him but we were also born and remain imperfect human beings. Have you not noticed how some longstanding pillars of the church can Fall From Grace by a sexual sin, fraud etc?

Yes, granted. We cannot be perfect in this life and may indeed confess a sin only to repeat it later.
But that is not the same as saying that that sin, or weakness, was part of someone's personality and makes them who they are. Sin is sin - someone may have a habitual sin, or bad habit, that they keep committing or falling into. That's not good; the root of it needs to be dealt with, cast out or whatever and the person forgiven and set free. Saying, for example, oh they are arrogant, it's who they are, their personality and we should accept it - is incorrect. The Holy Spirit is in us to transform us into Jesus' image and likeness, not to excuse our sins and tolerate them.

If he proves over a period of time that he can be trusted, if he is walking faithfully with God, talking openly about what he once did and not trying to cover it up, if he is showing that he can be trusted, with his own property and that of other people - then why not?
To deny him a chance to serve God and the church because he messed up 5 or 10 years previously, would be sending out the message that the church doesn't believe in forgiveness, second chances or that the Lord can forgive people and make them new.

No a weakness and a sin is a different thing. I'm talking about 'flaws' in our personalities - our weak points
What I said was the weaknesses in our personality can cause us to sin God forgives our sin but these remain. Our friends and family will know them. Imagine a young couple deeply in love. Say you ask the lad what he loves most about his girl he is likely so say something like this....
'That birthmark under her chin'...... 'that ear that pokes out'.... something like that - Our flaws attract people to us most it is human nature. In the same way flaws in our personality are loved and recognised by others too We also need to know and recognise them - I know mine! and beat myself up over them at times

And this Embezzler! Let's put it another way.....
If a leading church member had repented after being convicted and put away for child abuse - would you put him in charge of the Youth Group?
It's the same thing No wise person would put the past embezzler in charge of the Church's finances no matter how clever he was at figures

Or they may be healed, changed and dealt with by God.

'That birthmark under her chin'...... 'that ear that pokes out'.... something like that -

They are physical characteristics, which even then could be changed or eliminated, not weaknesses in someone's character; part of their sinful nature.

And this Embezzler! Let's put it another way.....
If a leading church member had repented after being convicted and put away for child abuse - would you put him in charge of the Youth Group?

Again, if, over time, he had shown himself to be trustworthy, not reoffended etc, then maybe. Though the period of time involved might be a lot longer - maybe 10 or 15 years.

It's the same thing No wise person would put the past embezzler in charge of the Church's finances no matter how clever he was at figures

But a church that refused to let a person move on because of a sin they had committed many years before, when that person didn't know Christ, had not been born again and received his forgiveness, would show that they were intolerant, not ready to forgive, to give another chance or to love as Jesus loves. How could they then preach a message of forgiveness and new life if they didn't practice what they preached? Is that what Jesus does; remembers past sins and refuses to trust because of what someone had, once, done?

Saul of Tarsus persecuted Christians, threw them in jail and maybe had some killed. What happened after he met the Lord Jesus and began preaching the Gospel? They were doubtless wary at first, but then they accepted him and even sent him to other Christians with a letter and money that they had collected. They did not say, 'you can't be trusted around believers so you'd better go away and preach on a desert island somewhere.' They didn't doubt his conversion and that he had become a new person.
Peter denied Jesus. Was this a weakness in his personality that he, and everyone else, had to accept and live with? No, only a few days after Pentecost he and John were arrested for preaching, put in jail, released and ordered not to talk about Jesus again - they ignored the warning and rejoiced that they had been allowed to suffer for Jesus. Legend says that Peter was crucified upside down because he considered he was not worthy to die in the same way as Jesus.

Oh well friend we will have to agree to disagree.. It is very healthy to face up to our weaknesses and we all have them.

Weil it's obvious you want to disagree with me You have set out to disagree with every word I have said
I'm certainly not perfect - we are not robots. My flaws are obvious to me and yours should be also. We accept each with our flaws and that is how we love them. One things is for sure ... I wouldn't want to be any different I have no false illusions about myself I love myself the way I was made. God Bless

We will have to agree to disagree then. I'm certainly not perfect. To me my flaws are obvious. I see other peoples' too; We accept each with our flaws and that is how we love them. One things is for sure though! ... I wouldn't want to be any different! I have no false illusions about myself and love myself just the way God made me

I'm not perfect either.
I accept myself - i.e "God made me creative, or with this gift. I'm not going to change and become scientific; creativity is my personality. Nor am I going to covet someone else's gifts." But I couldn't accept, for example, "I am lazy; that's just me, nothing I can do about it so everyone else will have to accept my laziness." I would certainly need to see, and own, the flaw, or fault, of laziness, but it would be wrong to say that it was part of me and could never change.

I agree that we often see the faults in others and need to see our own as well. If we don't, we will mistakenly feel that we are perfect, and may also become judgemental.

It's really hard to have a Bible study with someone who denies the meaning of what the Bible says. Yes, I am directing it toward the topic.

We are new creatures. God is able to make all grace abound to us, so that in all things, in all times, having all that we need we will abound in every good work. We are free from the bonds of our sins. All this "imputed righteous," but not actually walking in it stuff is contrary to the Bible. Yes, some of the old stuff still tries to cling, and we may have demonic strongholds to overcome, (yes, even Christians), but Jesus has overcome them, and He has given us that tools to overcome.

I'm sorry that even the "Charismatic" churches tolerate defeat, but our willingness to remain defeated does not annul God's faithfulness to carry out what He inspired, if we let Him. I'm not judging individuals who are struggling when I say these things. I am judging the fellowships who aren't equipping their people to expect victory over sin. Yes, God uses our faults, trials and hardships to win others, but that is no excuse to remain in sin, and to not recognize sin as agreeing with God's and our enemy, Satan. Satan steals, kills and destroys, and to give into him is to embrace theft, death and destruction into ourselves and those impacted by us. God redeems even that, but why not aim for the mark?

I've struggled with things, and I know that God will give victory. I had to go through some very intense deliverance ministry, plus have a friend confront me on an ongoing sin and do prayer battle with me, but God freed me. The frustrating thing is that the worst one is something God had given me victory over in the past and I opened the gate to it again. I'm still not perfect, but I am willing to walk toward perfection by God's grace. We all should be not just willing, but desirous of walking hand in hand with God toward His perfection. It's still a fallen world and we will always have struggles, but the more freedom from sin we allow in our lives the freer we are and the journey with God to that freedom is amazing.

Again, I am not condemning. I want to encourage us all to realize that there is something more in Jesus, and I want us all to walk in it. It is freeing, and joyous.

We are new creatures with Christ. I don't know about charismatic churches tolerating defeat we always believed we were more than conquerors and the ones I've attended of late are pretty full on and powerful believers. my faith is and always has been very strong. I know that Christ heals and seen many years of miracles. We are so blessed to have Him in our lives.
Really I don't think anyone wishes to remain in sin but people do fall even after they have been born again. I think it depends on our experience at conversion whether we have good teachers to feed baby Christians. We was taught about the Baptism of Fire that can attack us after our conversion. It was explained that satan has had control of our lives for so long he doesn't want to give up that control and puts us through the mill. With this information and help from the oversight I was able to get through this difficult time but some people are not advised about it or know what to expect. They just sail into their Christian lives not realising they have things that need dealing with and delivering. The result is these things are repressed and show up at a much later date and can cause quite a lot of problems by examples to the unsaved for instance.

Jiminpa I'm sure you will find peace. Sometimes our battles with sin are caused by guilt - as I explained about our weaknesses. It is important not to be ashamed of the way God made us but accept we are all beautiful in Christs' eyes.
When we face up to and admit our natural weaknesses then sin cannot attack us in the same way. Once guilt is gone we are free to accept Christs' love and help. I inherited a family obsessive compulsive problem and in my early days I directed this towards good things - like Christian business where I worked like a Trojan. Once I retired and unable to work like that, when I'd been sick I would to wander over to the hotel (just metres away) to see friends and neighbours for company. I began putting coins in the slots like the others and got a bit a problem. So you see we CAN get problems many years after our conversion and ministry but praise God He has helped me out of it.
I learned to direct this weakness in other directions like studying for hours on the computer and looking after the feral cats and some neighbours so I regard myself a victor again. The weakness will always be part of my nature but the Lord can always help me to use it for good.

I agree that we have weaknesses, well, sort of, but those are traits. Allowing sin to have victory over us because it's just our weakness is a different story. I will never be an accountant. I don't have the talents and I hate the tasks, and I suppose you could call the things that make accounting a poor fit "weaknesses." I more look at it as a sign that I was never meant to be an accountant. I'm good with that. I'm an excellent troubleshooter, sometimes too good. The things that are weaknesses in accounting are strengths in application support.

Finding peace, I'm more at peace than I've been in my life. I'm turning over the sins I can recognize in my life to God and His grace is sufficient to overcome them, and I'm oblivious to any other sins at the moment, and that is necessary for where I am in my life. I don't publicize much about myself on this forum. It's not a "safe" venue for that. I am going through quite a bit at this time, and God is bigger than my little situation, and it is in that that I have learned a peace that I have previously been unable to grasp. He is definitely carrying me when I am too weak to even call His name.

Christians have always had difficult times. I grew up with church Assembly every morning in my school, and religious education being a subject for everyone. Most kids were in the girl guides or scouts and had regular church parades. Our families either went to church regularly or just for weddings, funerals, christenings, but there was always church somewhere in our lives and we were taught to say our prayers as babies
It has always been difficult to be a Christian especially when those that have a born again experience but never so much as now. Therefore the most important part of our Christian lives should be to edify one another I've never felt this more important as I do now because the world is changing so much. The New Age is taking over. Where I live so many churches have closed down it is difficult to find Christians in the area. Christian Fellowship will be a privilege soon. Let us pray that this site doesn't come under attack.
