I was burning a CD disc today with the "new and improved" Realplayer; had just downloaded the latest version of RP this morning; cause they were advertising that you could do a lot more things with it, like; create a music album with individual tracks and titles; something they used to require the premium (payed for) version for. Instead of making a long convoluted story out of it; let me just make list of the sequence of the incident:
1- Started d/ling RP.

2- Noticed as it was installing; one of the pop-up boxes that I needed to click to except the agreement conditions; was one for Norton's anti-virus; and it made it look like to proceed with d/ling RP you needed to accept Norton's (I have had some bad experiences with Norton; it did not protect a pc; that died from a virus) so instead of accepting it I declined; which RP then let me d/l the rest of the player; but cause I didn't like them pushing Norton's---I had taken a screen shot, and was going to warn people here, about it.

3- Took a screen shot--which wouldn't work; of Norton's acceptance box. So I figured that it must be because it was in the middle of d/ling--but--thought maybe if I had another image in the forefront, it might take a shot. So opened up a web site, minimized it, took the scn shot; and the win10 notification box, for the screen shot going to Onedrive; popped out. But--and this maybe is when things went bongo-- the web site image would not go away; and I had to use task manager to put it away.

4- So got RP up and running and was going thru their tutorial and thought i would check-out their new CD burning app-was a lot easier to use then in the past- before you could only do one track; one song or a whole album--but it played like one track, no skipping to other tracks; for that you needed the premium version; but now free version is like that. well- it burned--said it was all done--popped into my CD player and it showed the tracks but nothing came out the speakers but silence. Yes I made sure it was audio cd. So gave up on that and though and put the CD back in the PC to see if I could play it on there and:

5- Could not open the start page. Wont open no matter what I try; tried to restart but can't get the the shut down screen. Shut off the computer by the on/off switch; but it acted like it was in sleep mode (lap top) I can use all my desk top icons, get on line. I have copies of Chrome and Edge pined to the task bar--Chrome works fine--but Edge has pop-up saying that "class not registered"? never heard that before.

6- So...I don't like to take out the battery and force a restart that way--did that once before on a different LT--and it never came back up---does anyone know of a work around for this? it should be the same as win8.1; I would think.
Thanks for any help.

Well...I found out; after searching for a couple hrs; that the start menu not opening; is a common problem with Windows 10; and can be hard to trouble shoot and sometimes people have to re-insert W10 and start over. There are several things most sites suggest to do to solve this problem; here is a typical one; which has you running Windows power shell, so you can run the system file checker or reinstall all windows apps; creating a new Windows user account; reseting or reinstalling Windows10:

They didn't suggest to just restart your PC; but maybe they figured you had already tried that; which was what I did after i found out that pressing the Win-key + L takes you to the lock screen; which then; in the lower right corner has a power button, you can either reset your PC or restart it. In Win7 Wkey+L used to switch between users. So I was able to restart the laptop and the start menu came back up. I don't know why the the start menu stopped working; they said it could be caused by conflicts between programs; mine was probably due to Realplayer and the screen shot messing up; but the CD not working after burning was caused by the Dvd/CD drive as it locked up later and I had trouble getting it to open.

Real Player still exists? Why?

It's user interface design; for me at least. When I got my HP LT it came installed with itunes and iplayer. I tried to get used to these; but they were the most un-intuitive programs I have seen in years. Try to find your music to record and it would be lost in libraries, genre's, albums, artist, drop down list, different files, and mixed up into individual play list; and it's downloading from Youtube, didn't work. The player was no better. So I d/led Realplayer; after seeing it top listed in Cnet, PCmag, and other sites; and it was easy to use right from the get-go; had a drop down button for utube that was seamless; put everything in an easy to use file for listening, or burning a cd. The latest version has cloud storage, video's online, burns CDs with individual tracks/play list and more stuff on-line then I will ever use. This problem I had, locking up the menu, the point of this thread; was from a known glitch in Win10 and my dvd/cd drive.

And as for hidden data files Windows is chock full of them:
