Never forget the ancestors.I visit the paths of the Trail of Tears whenever I can, when my family and I are traveling in the area where it took place. I make it a point to stop and show my respect to my ancestors. I walk for a way on the path and I burn sage and say prayers for my ancestors. I let them know that I am there and thinking about them. I take my children and husband with me and they stand with me as I mourn. They show their respect too. I often sit on the ground with my children and listen to them as they share their feelings and sadness about what happened to our ancestors there. It is a very moving and spiritual experience for us all. I want my children to know and understand the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors and of our people today. They must learn and understand it all, so they can teach it to their own children and help keep our people's stories alive.
