That was exactly the point I was making.

Do you worry equally about the woman with a tan because she has increased her risk of getting melanoma? Or the woman wearing spanx because she is interfereing with her blood circulation? Or the woman wearing high heel shoes because the body isn't supposed to balance on the foot like that? Or is it just a person's weight that is open for public opinion? [/quote

Women don't die early from wearing heals. Tanning is a natural process.
That's completely different from walking around with an extra 100, 200, 300 pounds hanging on a frame clearly not meant for that with organs clearly not meant for that.

Most people who are obese have psychiatric issues (such as depression or even abuse in their history) that have brought them to that weight...it is a symptom and not a disease on its own. IF you REALLY are concerned, are you doing anything for them that doesn't include counting their calories but rather helps confirm their self-worth in the eyes of God....like spending friend time with them.

I actually do take care of them when they get hospitalized for weight related complications...and trust me, these ladies usually have lived some very hard lives....and many don't lose weight even when being on calorie restricted diets while in our care for a couple weeks.

I understand that perfectly - but telling them they have a genetic condition is not helping either.

Proper fuel? No, being underweight - as in - being skinny is not hard on the body. Malnutrition is a serious issue, on the other hand.
We're talking the clinical definition here? If so, being underweight is a serious concern in and of itself.

Very straightforward? I used it in the sense of a person that was skinny but not malnourished.
So colloquially, not clinically? Underweight relative to the First World population? That makes more sense. Thank you for clarifying.

However, it's important to know that a person does not have to be malnourished in order for a certain degree of skinniness to be a sign of a chronic problem.

Proper fuel? No, being underweight - as in - being skinny is not hard on the body. Malnutrition is a serious issue, on the other hand. Like a deliberate refusal to eat food or certain foods over a long period of time.

I notice you talk about "patients" and "treatments" but you aren't an actual licensed practicing medical doctor, are you?

Yes, being fat can be caused by certain things, but almost always it is being caused by eating lots and lots and lots of bad foods all the time.

And honestly, shame on you. People who have serious health problems will read your post and think "I can't do anything about it, I must be one of those." and you will cause them to die earlier, live less of a life, and cause suffering for their family.

Actually, I am a NURSE and I do have patients that I treat. Underweight is a medical definition along with obesity...it isn't just "skinny". And YES, I do care and treat these patients on a regular basis....and the malnourished cause more concern than the obese. Please give your evidence toward your cause of "being fat" .... and since I actually do help these people on both sides of the scale every day, I am doing a lot more than causing them to become apathetic...compassion goes a lot further in helping empower people to take control of their personal health issues than judgement from people who don't know them from Adam. Trust me...calling the lovely lady who just worked very hard and lost 100 lbs but has another 100 to go, a "fat slob" isn't very therapeutic or useful. Nor is accusing the person who is fighting cancer and is jacked up on corticosteriods of "eating too much" because they have gotten the characteristic moon face and the pot belly related to the medication use. They already are fighting to recognize themselves in the mirror each morning as they fight to live. (not all cancer treatments leaving you looking like a skeleton). But thank you for your thoughtful opinion.

You'd have to give me specific examples. Maybe we've seen different types of blogs.

I would have to dig them up. Not to mention many of them are filled with harsh language and full frontal nudity (yeah, eww... lol)

This lovely 60 year old woman would be most likely diagnosed as medically "obese". However, I wish all my 60 year olds were this "unhealthy". Heck, I'd be happy if most of my 35 year old patients were this healthy. (skip to 2:19 if you want to skip the interview)

As a nurse on a women's floor at the hospital, I have gotten a real lesson on what a "normal" female body looks like. Although, women were thinner at this time because of the things you pointed out, at no time, is the perfect hour glass figure ever been "normal" female shape....except in Hollywood. Women tend to be more pear shaped or apple shaped depending on their genetics...even at their idea weight. And as you age, it changes even more.

She also does not appear to have much upper body strength at all either looking at her arms so I doubt that she did much housework. However, it isn't excess "time" that allows women to get fat but rather lack of it and the lack of time or energy to make meals from scratch. Can I add, that men ... even though they don't usually have much housework detail on top of working full-time and taking care of the kids, haven't kept to their idea body weights either....

Most of the girls I knew in high school had an "hourglass" figure. My mother, grandmother had hourglass figures before having children. My mother had an 18" waist when she married my father. Maybe we just have better genetics here. My grandfather had a 28" waist and a 54" chest when he enlisted.

If you knew about bodybuilding (natural bodybuilding), you would know that building large muscles requires repetitive motion with larger weights. Pushing a vacuum around or dusting isn't going to bulk you up. Which is why long distance runners look like twigs and power lifters look like they need to go on a diet.

Actually I 'REALLY' am concerned because they're a danger to themselves and just because I don't go out there and and make friends with them doesn't mean I don't really care

HOW do you care? If you care about something, you actually do something about it...otherwise you just have an opinion. Without getting to know them, you really don't even know what to "care" about...and you certainly don't have enough information to know what their weight issue really is or related to.

I don't think waist size is inherently indicative of one's health.

I think we should promote healthy living; whether that means someone losing weight or gaining weight, it doesn't matter. Being overweight isn't the only manner in which poor health can manifest itself.

This is definitely not true. I'm in medical school, and we have studied, the dangers, of a low body weight. It's not only caused, by anything deliberate, that the person has done, either. Malnutrition, it can happen to people, of all sizes, if they are not eating properly.

A friend, of mine, on this forum, she has talked about the health problems, that she's had, due to being underweight, having a low body mass index. She is under the age limit, for participation, in this section, and moderators, they are strict about it. I see she has liked posts in this thread, so, she must have read some. She has written, several posts, in other areas, about health problems, with weight. Also, about rude comments people make, about her being thin.

I spent two weeks in hospital recovering from physical exhaustion and a mild case of malnutrition. It wasn't that I intentionally skipped meals. It was just that I became so focused on work, I forgot to eat. Your stomach actually shrinks and it takes less food to make you feel full.

What's so bad about promoting eating healthy and not too much?
If people smoke it's also considered normal that they have government campaigns. Lol you even get kicked out from the restaurant when you smoke. You're treated like an outcast. Go smoke somewhere else. They even want to forbid you to smoke on your own balcony or in your home if it bothers the neighbours. They'd get a lot of court cases if they asked an overweight person to eat outside or forbid them to eat inside their own house or on the balcony. Yeah it's for your own health and it bothers the neighbours. The smell of all that baked meat can really bother others. I heard people complain that someone was barbecuing and the smoke went in her house and she couldn't sit on the balcony.

Smoking is much different than eating unhealthy food or eating too much.

Smoking can cause cancer in people who do not even smoke, via second hand smoke. If someone smokes in the table next to yours, you are inhaling their smoke, and they are putting you at risk of developing disease.

If the person next to you is eating too much, your health is not affected.

I think it's great to promote healthy eating, we need things like this. Any sort of education for health is very good! However, do not compare it to the dangers of smoking around other people, especially in enclosed spaces like restaurants.
