Plastic in this context refers to some people of Irish descent, maybe three of four generations back, who go to a bar, get drunk and put money in a bucket for Irish Freedom from 'British oppression'.

They take no time to educate themselves on the reality in Ireland, but because their name is Murphy or Donnelly, they think they know all about us...
