Greetings all of you my brothers and sisters in Christ our Lord. Peace and love be unto you all.

I am here posting a thread for all fellow Tolkienites here for us to discuss everything about Tolkien and so on and so forth. For the time being, I love reading The Silmarillion.

I am not sure I qualify as a Tolkienite per se, but I love Lord Of The Rings both in book and film forms.

Peter Jackson imo made the greatest film trilogy ever. These films are gorgeous, magical, family friendly, and mix-in alot of great morals throughout.

Jackson's The Hobbit was atrocious by comparision, it really feels like it was carelessly cobbled together and the terrible CGI whereby the characters were enhanced with videogame-like abilities to run, jump, leap, fall, etc.

^I have no problem with The Hobbit films except when the CGI looked like it devolved instead of ramping it all up to eleven. I mean, if you compare the special effects of the two trilogy, the first is a lot better. Now, I have been stuck in the lore of the Years of the Lamps, Years of the Trees, and the First Age of Middle Earth. I really enjoyed everything in those eras because it is for me, the most thrilling chapter of the Middle Earth stories.

To me The Hobbit trilogy just wasn't faithful enough to the source material, it added that stupid dwarf/elf romance subplot (it embarrassed me), and the CGI was terrible with video game physics.

I wanted a really charming tale of Bilbo Baggins, There And Back Again, I wanted the movies to transport me into a magical what essentially is a children's story. I wasn't feeling it at all. Whereas the characters in the LOTR endeared themselves to me, these characters felt two dimensional.

Agreed! They should just have made it into two movies and not three. Also, that romance subplot is unnecessary. It just takes away some important part of that movie. Also, after The Hobbit, if ever The Silmarillion ever gets a movie, I so hope that they will not make it into a trilogy. This book is so hard to fit into 3 movies. A group of singles, duologies and trilogies must be made in order to fill the audiences with the awe of those movies whilst simultaneously seeing the action as they were in the book.
First off must be the Ainulindale where a poetic creation story was made and I just hope to see Eru and the Ainur in which the entire movie is about a lengthy opera. A lengthy opera that holds a lot of wonders that will hopefully be etched into the audience's mind. Next, the first days where 14 Valar and several Maiar enter into Arda to shape the world until Melkor came in to ruin them over and over and over again until Tulkas came in. Then The Years of the Lamps, followed by The War of Powers, The Sundering of The Elves and so on and so forth until that freakingly awesome War of Wrath. Man! I can't wait to see Ancalagon The Black and the downfall of Melkor/ Morgoth. And if ever it can still be, The Akalabeth where it would be divided into two movies or so and I hope to see Of The Rings of Power and Of The Third Age arc that leads to... Self explanatory.

Anybody ever read The Annotated Hobbit with commentary by Douglas A. Anderson? I bought it last year and it is a treasure trove of facts and interesting anecdotes regarding J.R.R. Tolkien, his family and friends and his writings over the years. It gives insight I never thought I'd know about the creation of Middle Earth and all of the Tolkien characters. Check it out. It's worth it.

I have not seen the Hobbit films. The previews were more than enough. Dwarfs with beards shorter than mine!

yeah they are nothing but popcorn films at best and terrible adaptations. tolkien was "raped" by this cash cow. this was soulless michael bayish material. there is no viewer immersion into middle earth and "there and back again".

The "Riddles in the Dark" sequence was the only segment of the films which I thought captured the essence of the first trilogy. The dwarfs were poorly constructed characters it was impossible to grow attached to. Super-Legolas was just stupid.

I've been a Tolkien fan since I first read The Hobbit as a child back in the 70s. Since then I've read all of the Middle Earth books - Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion, Book of Lost Tales, Narn I Hin Hurin, and the History of Middle Earth series too. Amazing creation by this literary genius.

In my opinion the films are rubbush. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was passable but the Hobbit is a mockery of Tolkien's world. I have heard rumours that a film version of the Silmarillion is planned -please NO!
