6 technically. Clarinet studio and lessons are rolled together and listed on my schedule as one class. The studio meets once a week and all you do is listen to other clarinetist perform and give feedback. Occasionally our teacher will give a lecture on something clarinet related. Woodwind studio is like clarinet studio in that it's rolled together with student recital and all you do is listen to people play, but in there you don't give feedback. Recital attendance is going to x number of performances a semester for attendance credit....not really sure why.

The university I'll be attending is on the quarter system, and we start in late September rather than in August as most with semester terms do, so course enrollment for the autumn term hasn't begun yet. I have already submitted my choices for a special program all first-year students at my school are required to participate in called Thinking Matters. It's designed to help us transition from high school to college by challenging us to examine our perceptions and the way we interact with the world, to expose us to new ideas, and to make conceptional connections across various disciplines, all so we can hopefully strengthen our academic decision-making skills. I chose a residential program called ITALICS (Immersion in the Arts: Living in Culture):

ITALIC is a new residence-based program built around a series of big questions about the historical, critical and practical purposes of art and its unique capacities for intellectual creativity, communication, and expression. This year-long program fosters close exchanges among faculty, students and guest artists and scholars in class, over meals and during excursions to arts events. We trace the challenges that works of art have presented to categories of knowledge -- history, politics, culture, science, medicine, law -- by turning reality upside-down or inside-out, or just by altering one's perspective on the world. The arts become a model for engaging with problem-solving: uncertainty and ambiguity confront art makers and viewers all the time; artworks are experiments that work by different sets of rules. Students will begin to understand and use the arts to create new frameworks for exploring our (and others') experience.

We additionally choose courses in the THINK series, and have writing requirements, mandatory freshman seminars, and this other set of GE requirements called Ways of Thinking / Ways of Doing. It's sort of exhilarating but is a bit more of a complicated process that I think most colleges have for their first-year students. We do have this cool program that helps us to map everything out, in addition to having advisors and other forms of guidance. I'll post more about my schedule when I sort it out.

Nursing has set courses. I'm told what to sign up for each semester. For example, last semester I took five classes for 17 credits (units), which included 252 required clinical hours. This semester I'm taking six classes for 14 credits, which includes 86 clinical hours. Next semester I'll have 294 clinical hours and four classes for 14 class credits. Then I'll have to pass the NCLEX-RN in order to get licensed.

:tearsofjoy: Oh my gosh. I'm laughing so hard at the September version of myself who was such an overenthusiastic little newbie. I wrote that weeks before the autumn quarter even began! I completely rearranged my schedule once I met with my advisor. My school has specific General Education Breadth Requirements, and most of my classes this year are fulfilling the ones I still need after transferring in AP and dual enrollment credits.

This quarter I'm taking:
. The Science of Politics
. Biosecurity and Bioterrorism Response
. How to think about the Charlie Hebdo Attacks: Political, Social, and Cultural Contexts
. Human Behavioral Biology
. Dance, Movement and Medicine: Immersion in Dance for Parkinson Disease (1 unit)
. Introducing Ockham & His Razor: Mind & Metaphysics, Logic, Epistemology & Ethics (weekend seminar)
. Individual Work, Drawing and Painting
